Roman Catholic Church attack on Human Rights and Benedict XVI’s cover-up

Savita denied abortion

Savita denied abortion

On October 28, 2012, Savita Halappanavar, a dentist by profession, died in Ireland at University hospital in Galway.  She shouldn’t have.  While the death was listed as resulting from pregnancy—it is a lie—that was exposed quickly.  Ms. Savita Halappanavar’s death was cold-blooded, premeditated murder as the doctors knew that she would die, executed by the government of Ireland controlled by the criminal element led by the odious odoriferous opportunist, the Primate of Ireland, controlling the Roman Catholic Church. (cf. here). The longer the senile Sean cardinal Brady

stays in place as Primate of All Ireland, loathed by many for his relentless cover-up of pedophiles in the Roman Catholic Church, and his rigid stand against abortion in all cases, the greater the damage inflicted on the people of Ireland will be and the greater will be the number of needless deaths, maiming, and waste of human potential (cp. “When There’s a Heartbeat: Miscarriage Management in Catholic-Owned Hospitals.” American Journal of Public Health, vol.98, no.10 (October 2008).

Savita Halappanavar

Savita Halappanavar

Savita was a 31-year-old married woman, four months pregnant.  She went to the hospital with a miscarriage in progress that developed into a blood infection. She could easily have been saved if the already doomed fetus was aborted. Instead, her doctors did nothing, explaining that “this is a Catholic country”. Savita replied that she was a Hindu and the laws for Catholics should not apply to her.  She was 17 weeks pregnant  and no fetus could survive outside of the uterus at that age; she contracted septicaemia (the presence of pathogenic organisms in the bloodstream; it is characterized by a whole-body inflammatory state (called a systemic inflammatory response syndrome or SIRS) caused by severe infection, and is usually accompanied by high fevers, hot, flushed skin, elevated heart rate, hyperventilation, altered mental status, swelling, and low blood pressure) and

Joseph Ratzinger as Pope and NAZI youth leader

Joseph Ratzinger as Pope and NAZI youth leader

Ireland is a Catholic country quite like Spain and other nations cannibalized by a rogue religion that, throughout its terrible history, whipped women, castrated men, burned babies and worse during the days of the unholy Inquisition—a reality that still exists thanks to the twisted mentality of the German pope Josef Ratzinger.  India, where the woman was born, has already done away with such insane laws demanded by the Roman Catholic Church. The complicit dragoons in the medical field more akin to the Nazi torture-doctors in Third Reich Germany than any respectable medical association today left Halappanavar to suffer in agony for days.  These devout draconian Roman Catholics  only intervening once it was too late. The medical “team” of doctors and the pathetic priests and corrupt clergy must be held and tried for no less than manslaughter in the first degree.  That the doctors deliberately refused to help Savita could elevate the charges to premeditated murder on orders of the Irish Catholic Church following the rules of the Vatican.  Religion must never be allowed to dictate to medicine again!

Savita’s death is just the latest in a long line of tragedies directly attributable to the doctrines and beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church. It is certainly a knowledgeable truth that there are many good, progressive Catholics, but the problem is that the Roman Catholic Church nor most evangelical extremists’ churches, isn’t a democracy.  Not only are women silenced, the poor ignored as they are passed over by self-serving schizophrenics such as the Albanian nun, Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Known as Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the Albanian nun Agnes Bojaxhiu devoted her life to increasing the misery of the sick and hunger of the poor, but gave the grapes of wrath garnered from her own duplicity in money laundering money, offering no hope for progressive changes in her church no adding her voice or vote in its governance.  She protected self-acknowledged, tried and convicted pedophiles arguing that they were misguided and their ministry to the Roman Catholic youth (upon whom they preyed) and to her own group of religious nuns was an insult to her god and her community of sisters.

Like ancient trees immobilized, ossified and incapable of growth or the flowering of saplings or leaves in dead areas, as with Arizona’s Petrified Forest known for its Late Triassic fossils, the Roman Catholic Church is a petrified oligarchy, a dictatorship like the medieval monarchies it once existed alongside.

Moscow billionaire Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church enriched by illegally selling cigarettes

As ignoble and repugnant as the Patriarch Kirill of Moscow, Russia, who enriched himself with more than $2 to 4 billion in sales of illegal cigarettes to Russians to buy himself a villa in Switzerland, a penthouse in St. Petersburg, a fleet of cars and a yacht among other luxuries while preaching the poverty of his Christ (read Yuri Mamchur’s article here and here and here and watch here), the Roman Catholic Church, not just in Ireland but universally, is run by a small circle of conservative, rigidly ideological old men who make all decisions and choose their own successors.  None has been more reprehensible than today’s mulligrub, menacing, Mephistophelean, unpropitious calamitous corrupt and baneful Benedict XVI who was far happier carrying books out of libraries as a Nazi youth and burning them in salute to the Nazi cause (Stratz, Hans-Wolfgang. “Die Studentische `Aktion wider den undeutschen Geist’ im Frühjar 1933,” Vierteljahrshefte für Zeitgeschichte Vol. 4, 1968, pp. 347-372).

Nazi Youth burn books from German librariesThe German book burning under the Nazis was repeated by Young Americans (Republican Youth Corp) in the USA who burned books that argued against racism, for religious tolerance and the pursuit of knowledged, especially the investigation of evolution, science, and further advance of mathematical studies.

Young Americans burn comic books in Nazi fashion

Young Americans burn comic books in Nazi fashion

Evangelical groups, primarily Southern Baptists and Adventists in Texas, in the 1960s-1970s rallied youth to burn tapes of rock-and-roll and comic books. Crucifixes, religious statues and other symbols were similarly burned in Lima, Peru, in the early 2000s.  What was not known was that many evangelical groups, and those that would become megachurches (especially in Oklahoma) would be as corrupt and filled with as many pedophiles as existed in Roman Catholic parishes: all promising victims “eternal rewards”.

On December 21, 2012, the former Nazi youth exposed his ignorance of science and psychology with another raw rant against human rights when addressing a papal audience of those caving into pontifical pressure and pretenses. Ratzinger’s Christmas address was more ignominious and detestable, setting the stage for more human carnage in the name of Christ.

Benedict’s hypocrisy rising with his appointment of the least intelligent and morally bankrupt clergy to bishoprics, archbishoprics and the cardinalate means that, whatever individual Catholics may do today or tomorrow, the resources of the repressive and irresponsible church as an institution are bent toward opposing social progress and positive change all over the world. Every dollar put into the church collection plate, every Sunday service or daily Mass attended, every hour of time and effort put into volunteering or working for church organizations, is inevitably a show of support for the institutional church and its abhorrent mission. When a person has no voice, there’s only one thing the thinking individual has left is to boycott the beast denounced by Luther and other reformers before their own institutions became animals devouring the flesh of those who opposed them, or like Jean Calvin in Geneva burning Servetus for having a doctrine contrary to his own, or marching them to Tower Hill in England to chop off, however crudely, their heads, or hang them in the wasteland of Uganda run by the former street-walker, Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga blessed by Pope Benedict XVI as the twenty-first century clone of Adolf Hitler who will protect his bible and religious intolerance, now inched up the legs of male supporters to be the Speaker of Parliament.

Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga is of  one of the most intolerant nations who backs its attack on marginalized people by claiming foundation found in the Bible to “protect the children”.  A literalist who is ignorant of all Biblical languages but is in the pay of Scott Lively of Abiding Truth Ministries, uses the Old Testament to support her rant against human rights. Kadaga’s rant is the same mantra mouthed by orange juice representative in Florida Anita Bryant who has made the hate crimes of Iran and other Sharia-controlled nations seem mild.

Throughout the world, Catholic bishops, especially the narcissistic Timothy Dolan of New York City (USA), the viciously vulgar, vitriolic, venomous viper Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne of Lima (Peru; born December 28, 1943), who has been accused of murdering his predecessor and who has never been elected president of Peru’s Council of Bishops.

A member of Opus Dei (as were his parents), Cipriani Thorne has done more to stifle education in Peru than any predecessor and has sided with the Fujimori dictatorship.  Cipriani Thorne congratulated Fujimori and super-spy Vladimiro Montesinos and their paid assassins known as Las Colinas on “rooting out communism” by kidnapping and slaughtering teachers and their students, decapitating and dismembering the victims bodies and burying them in isolated areas, while accepting laundered narco-trafficking illegal drug money and sanctioning death squads in quest for totalitarian rule in Peru.

Scott Lively (2d left) in Uganda with other USA evangelical ministers pushing for Kill the Gays legislation

The entire councils of Roman Catholic Bishops of Ireland and of the USA, have engaged in a systematic, organized effort going back decades to cover up for priests who molest children, pressuring the victims to sign confidentiality agreements and quietly assigning the predators to new parishes where they could go on molesting. Tens of thousands of children have been raped and tortured as a result of this conspiracy of silence, not just in the Roman Catholic Church but increasingly in evangelical (Pentecostal, Adventist, Jehovah’s Witnesses, etc) extremist exhorted congregations, especially in the Sovereign Grace Ministries (30-year-old family of churches with more than 80 congregations), Ted Haggard Ministries, Bishop Eddie Long, etc., matching the increasing pedophile pastors practice in Nigeria and Uganda.   Although these crimes against humanity are not exclusively within the Roman Catholic Church as there are certainly as many in the evangelical community from the ministries of Ted Haggard (and his boy toys), Tony Perkins, Scott Lively and his Abiding Truth Ministries (a certified hate group) campaigning for the slaughter of ten percent of all Ugandans, the Roman Catholic hierarchy gets more publicity because of its insane and unbiblical demand for the unnatural and abnormal act of clerical celibacy—even though thirty-eight popes were married and at least seven popes admitted to supporting and even raising to the cardinalate their young male lovers to shower favor and favoritism on them.

The worse offender against the dignity of the individual is the engorged evangelist Joseph Ratzinger, the current pope, but is representative of the German clergy where 24 dioceses out of 27 were found to maintain pedophile priests, with 94 priests and church employees directly identified as active pedophiles—with Ratzinger saying nothing and was supported by the scandal-riddled Irish episcopacy and clergy with the Bishop of Limerick Donald Murray, and the Bishop of Kildare Jim Moriarty, two of the Prelates who concealed clerical abuse of children for over more than three decades being the first to resign, and then followed on Christmas Eve with the demanded resignation of two Auxiliary Bishops of Dublin, Eamonn Walsh and Raymond Field.

Father Stephen Kiesler

Father Stephen Kiesle

When he was Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, this pernicious prelate was personally implicated in a case from the 1970s in which at least three sets of parents reported that a priest in his diocese had sexually abused their children. Ratzinger registered shock but did little more than assign the pedophile priest, Father Stephen Miller Kiesle, who tied up and molested two preteen boys in the rectory of Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Union City, California, to therapy.

A 1985 letter, written in Latin, to the Diocese of Oakland signed by then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. The letter said that a California priest accused of molesting children should not be defrocked without further study.

Ratzinger broke German law and cast out all claims without notifying law enforcement, washing his hands of the matter, with a whispered affirmation that as a cardinal, Ratzinger was merely following the blind bigotry of the invidiously iniquitous John Paul II who rejected any “aspersions” cast on priests—until they became “too public”. That priest, Father Stephen Miller Kiesle, was back on duty in just a few short days and went on to molest more children. Ratzinger was defended by then Oakland Diocese Bishop Salvatore Cordileone (who was appointed to the diocese by Ratzinger), who later became the cardinal bishop of San Francisco and is better known for his public drunkenness and lewdness than any spirituality.

By 2001, Ratzinger was officially defined by a Texas court as an accomplice in several pedophile cases. Ratzinger’s prestige and power in Houston, ultimately exempted him from the charge of complicity and he was not required to testify especially with the intercession of the insidious Condoleezza Rice who needed Vatican help to strip nations of corridors to crude to benefit her employers ExxonMobile and other oil big business.  Benedict would later snub Rice when the duplicity, the war in Iraq after snubbing John Paul II’s special envoy, Cardinal Pio Laghi, and other “troubling issues” became common knowledge (read here and here).

Ratzinger ignored a detailed letter against Kiesel, first written in 1981, and several follow-up letters, for four years. Finally, in 1985, he wrote back saying that more time was needed, and that they had to proceed very slowly to safeguard “the good of the Universal Church” in light of “the young age of the petitioner” — by which he meant not the victimized children, but the pedophile priest. It was blatantly stated that Kiesel was a good priest, and some cardinals even argued that he could not be laicized (declared not to be a priest) since he was under the age of 40.  However, by contrast, when the rogue archbishop Emmanuel Milingo of Zambia ordained married men as priests, both in New York and New Jersey, he was laicized six days later.  In 2011, Pope Benedict XVI fired an outspoken Australian bishop William Morris of the Toowoomba diocese, west of Brisbane who called on the Church to ordain women and married men, as vehemently as his pandering predecessor John Paul II.

In 2001, Cardinal Ratzinger wrote a letter, De Delictis Gravioribus, to all Catholic bishops advising them how to handle accusations of sex crimes by priests. Ratzinger rejected repeated calls to notify legal authorities but told all bishops that they were to report such cases only to the Vatican and tell no one else: “Cases of this kind are subject to the pontifical secret.” Ratzinger’s letter is precisely the smoking gun—as he recognized pedophilia and was prepared to stop the exposure of any Roman Catholic priest or prelate from public or media scrutiny in defiance of the laws of any area, state, or nation.  Like the molester of young males in the sixteenth century, Pope Julius II (like Pope Julius III and others), Ratzinger believed the Roman Catholic Church was above all civil laws and the Roman Catholic Church should rule over all nations in the same draconian fashion as the religious stranglehold of Christianity has on the government of Uganda.

John Bonny bishop of Antwerp, Belgium

The rebellion is growing in the Roman Catholic Church, to the dismay of the German pope, with Bishop Johan Bonny of Antwerp, Belgium, who was elevated to the position of being the 22nd bishop in the wake of revelation of sexual abuse by a bishop, openly announcing that he would be ready to ordain married men, believing that non-celibate clerics could contribute to the pastoral needs of the Church.

Benedict’s supporters have unique backgrounds, as is the case of the American friar Benedict Groeschel who blamed the epidemic of child molestation on sexually wanton boys (read here and here) who tempt priests into assaulting them.  Other clergy threaten to cut off funding for immigrants’ rights advocates because they sometimes work with gay-rights advocates. Preventing immigrants from getting legal and medical aid is less important than ensuring the church isn’t contaminated by even indirect contact with anyone who helps gay people.

Roman Catholic bishop endorsed fascist Spain's Franco

Roman Catholic bishop endorsed fascist Spain’s Franco

In a stellar sign of how ridiculously wretched,  disproportionate and unhinged the church’s martyrdom complex is, the current pope has compared expanding the rights of women and gay people to the murderous anticlerical violence of the 1930s Spanish civil war.  Yet it was the Roman Catholic Church that endorsed and blessed Franco and hailed Fascism in Spain.  Other supporters included the unsaintly Jesusmaria Escriva, who in April 1946, preached to Franco and his family, and from the fascist dictatorship built the basic foundation of Opus Dei (Allen, John L. (2005), Opus Dei: An Objective Look Behind the Myths and Reality of the Most Controversial Force in the Catholic Church, Garden City: Doubleday, p. 58).

Blessing of Franco by the Roman Catholic Church

Blessing of Franco by the Roman Catholic Church

Opus Dei, following the design of Franco, is a paramilitary, pro-fascist, antimodernist, integralist (reactionary) organization that does not tolerate dissent–and became a trump card for reactionary popes through the twisted times of John Paul II and Benedict XVI.  On the alleged sanctity of John Paul II, read here and here and here.

The Roman Catholic Church, like its Eastern Orthodox “brother church”, has long lied about its own role in the atrocities of the Franco regime that it helped gain power and murder countless innocent people with the blessing of Jesusmaria Escriva, who was never a saint or holy man, and his odious opportunistic Opus Dei and other totalitarian dictatorships from Hitler and Mussolini to the impoverishment of Peru and other Latin American countries, and secret donations to religious political funds in Spain, the USA (where it secretly funneled money into the campaign by the dubiously devout Rick Santorum) and Uganda. At the same time, under the direction of Ratzinger, the Vatican used its official UN observer status to team up with Islamic theocracies like Iran (where Ratzinger was represented by Msgr. Romeo Panciroli; Deputy Foreign Minister Mohammad Hashemi Rafsanjani, the brother of President Hashemi Rafsanjani, declared  Iran’s full endorsement of this collaboration and said there were many avenues for co-operation between religious states which were not confined to the prohibition of abortion) and Libya to oppose calls for family planning services to be made available in the world’s poorest nations with Libya claiming that any form of birth control was not only detrimental to the state but against the will of the god of Islam. Libya and the Roman Catholic Church were joined by Peru dictator Alberto Fujimori who had hundreds of mountain people in Peru forcibly sterilized with the encouragement from his daughter Keiko and son Kenye (both of whom sit in the 2012 thoroughly corrupt Peru Congress that is battered by neo-Nazi leader Martha Chavez) seeking to overthrow their father’s conviction for crimes against humanity.

Like the pandering Polish pope, John Paul II, Ratzinger has sent emissaries to desperately poor, AIDS-ravaged regions of Africa to spread the life-destroying lie that condoms do not prevent transmission of HIV. This papal absurdity was accepted and applauded by the Russian Orthodox Church that is run by a womanizing, child abusing clergy led by Patriarch Kirill who found nothing wrong with the Romanov family’s murder of innocent peasants and apostates (and were declared saints in the Russian Orthodox Church after well-placed bribes were placed with Patriarch Kirill of Moscow) and claimed that “attacks” on the church were identical to those by people who overthrew the scandalous Romanov dynasty; his words and that of Ratzinger were glorified by the statement of the deputy chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin.

Roger Vangheluwe, Bishop of Brugge

Roger Vangheluwe, Bishop of Brugge

Roman Catholic clergy and bedecked bishops in white lace flounces over flowing dresses of crimson, in the mid-20th century appointed a special papal commission to study whether Catholicism should permit the use of birth control. The commission, to no one’s surprise was composed almost completely of men chosen from their members. Theologians Anthony Kosnik, William Carroll, Ronald Modras, James Schulte, and Agnes Cunningham (the token female) took on the task. In 1977 they published Human Sexuality: New Directions in American Catholic Thought—not a woman of the general laity was involved, consulted, or considered.  The men, none of whom could become pregnant even after being raped, held the final card by claiming spiritual authority found nowhere in the Bible, yet as a few wags wrote: if men could become pregnant abortion would be a sacrament—bring a scowl from the German dragoon.  When the commission almost unanimously recommended that women should be allowed contraceptives, the church led by Ratzinger ignored the recommendation and doubled down on their absolute ban on contraception.

The Roman Catholic hierarchy has long preferred the death of a pregnant woman, impregnated even by rape or incest, over the removal of dead, deformed or damaging fetal tissue that can cost the woman her life.  The doctrine espoused by predatory prelates in countries where Roman Catholicism is the main force, such as in Latin America, Italy, Ireland and Poland, is that every zygote is a human baby in defiance of all medical logic and research to the contrary.

Brasilian cardinal Cardosa Sobrinho in political cartoon.

The patronizing pastors and predatory prelates, such as Jose Cardoso Sobrinho who has been characterized as being key-hole spies, have excommunicated the doctors who performed an abortion on a pregnant 9-year-old who’d been raped by her stepfather.  He went so far as to excommunicate the child’s mother for agreeing to the abortion but did not speak out or condemn the incestuous father who had been regularly raping the child since she was six years old. No charges, ecclesiastical or secular were filed against the father, although the mother was reprimanded for not having sufficient control over her daughter.

Brasil’s anachronistic Archbishop Jose Cardoso Sobrinho (born in Caruaru, June 30 1933- ) of the coastal city of Recife announced that for the Vatican he was excommunicating the entire family of the child who medically would not have been able to deliver a baby since her hips were too narrow but not the child since she was a minor.  The doctors who performed the abortion were hailed for their efforts, the Brasilian Minister of health Jose Gomes Temporao referred to the doctors’ work, performed March 4, 2009, as “brilliant”.

Cordoso Sobrinho excommunicates doctors and families who tolerate necessity of an abortion.

Cordoso Sobrinho excommunicates doctors and families who tolerate necessity of an abortion.

Temporao declared that doctors were required to put law before religion, a statement that the majority of Brasil agreed with, since, on the average, 8700 women die each year because of the lack of professional abortion providers and follow-up examinations.

A war of words ensued between the popular President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and the archbishop over the church’s decision.   The President said:”As a Christian and a Catholic,

Brasil questions Catholic tradition and authority

Brasil questions Catholic tradition and authority

I find it deeply lamentable that a bishop of the Catholic Church has such a conservative attitude,” Lula said on Globo TV. “In this case, the medical profession was more right than the church. One of the doctors involved in the procedure, Dr. Olimpio Moraes, said he thanked the archbishop for his excommunication because the controversy sheds light on Brasil’s restrictive abortion laws. He said women in Brasil’s countryside are victimized by Brazil’s ban on abortion in the same way as they are in all Roman Catholic controlled countries (more than one million women undergo abortions each year in Brasil, and doctors treat more than 250,000 of them because of botched abortion techniques; read here and here and here).

Dom José cardinal Cardoso Sobrinho of Brasil

Dom José cardinal Cardoso Sobrinho of Brasil

Cardinal Cardoso Sobrinho has had other spurious accolades to his credit: he is among those who protect pedophiles throughout Brasil and has been seen in gay clubs.  Brasil’s (O. Carm.) of Recife and Olinda, has been portrayed in cartoons and tabloids not only as a peeping-tom: an alter ego of Brasil’s Roman Catholic Church but as a viper determined to extract confessions of presumed guilt from women in the same manner as

Dom José Cardoso Sobrinho cartoon

the Spanish Inquisition interrogated women with threats and force of diabolical designed machinery.  Among the least qualified for the cardinalate, it was Cardoso Sobrinho’s vehemently violent rhetoric that won him the beret that announced his ascension to the college of cardinals and left dread in the decaying family structure in Brasil that the prelate continuously attacked from pulpit and public squares.  As the clerical clown crowed, there was never a human right that he regarded or respected.

Every diocesan member had to fall to the miscreant mind-numbing murmurs of Mother Church.  The theological troglodyte retired on July 1, 2009; even the President of Brasil declaring that the prelate pushed beyond the borders of fairness and mercy with his senseless multiple excommunications.

The Roman Catholic episcopacy in Ireland is as savage and senseless as Cardoso Sobrinho in sanctioning the unnecessary deaths of women who cannot successfully or willingly give birth to products of rape, incest, and malformation. Savita Halappanavar wasn’t the first to die at Catholic-run hospitals that are willing to let women die rather than having a therapeutic safe abortion, even when a miscarriage is already in progress and no possible procedure could save the fetus.  Similar fate was in store for Americans whose closest hospital was Roman Catholic and where doctors forgot their Hippocratic Oath written in Ionic Greek (late 5th century BC),  that requires a new physician to swear upon a number of healing gods that he will uphold a number of professional ethical standards and look after the welfare of a living mortal.

A majority of Roman Catholic priests and prelates refused to provide contraception or abortion to women who were abducted and forced to work as prostitutes. Roman Catholic clergy have even gone as far as filing a frivolous lawsuit—that they lost—complaining that contraceptives were violating their religious freedom in telling women how they could control and manage their reproductive rights and bodies when the government took away their contract.  US District Judge Richard Stearns explained why the bishops were in the wrong, writing:

To insist that the government respect the separation of church and state is not to discriminate against religion; indeed, it promotes a respect for religion by refusing to single out any creed for official favor at the expense of all others…This case is about the limits of the government’s ability to delegate to a religious institution the right to use taxpayer money to impose its beliefs on others [who may or may not share them].

It is worse in Poland, the land of Polish extremism where hoodlums run free in the streets to deny individual rights of choice with praise from pastors to priests in their stand against what they see as corruption.  In Poland, the Roman Catholic Church, using tactics of the medieval Inquisition of the Christian religion in the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries, ordered Polish politicians to vote for a law banning IVF and threatened to excommunicate any who didn’t comply.  Those who did not capitulate immediately to the carnivorous clergy were mocked publicly and churches launched broadsides against the government as being “set against god”.

The Vatican with the entire episcopacy in lockstep as if all were hailing the return and revitalization of Ratzinger’s Third Reich, quickly went after women’s right of choice, specifically targeting the Komen Foundation and its organization better known for its “race for a cure” for breast cancer than its support of Planned Parenthood. It was the Roman Catholic Church that was the major source of the pressure on the Komen Foundation that led to its disastrous decision to cut ties with Planned Parenthood, with many claiming that the Komen Foundation was a front for the Roman Catholic Church.  As Reuters news agency noted:  “In recent years, Komen has allocated at least $17.6 million of the donations it receives to U.S. Catholic universities, hospitals and charities”–definitely not without ties to the Roman Catholic Church.  The veil of secrecy that shrouded the fund-raiser was removed.  Komen’s quickly lost favor when its support of Planned Parenthood became public knowledge and Church opposition reached dramatic new proportions in 2011, when the 11 bishops who represent Ohio’s 2.6 million Catholics announced a statewide policy banning church and parochial school donations to Komen.  Being a covert hand of the Roman Catholic Church, Komen within a few days reversed itself and withdrew its financial support of Planned Parenthood.

Forever the Grand Inquisitor, worse than that defined by Dostoevsky in his Brothers Karamazov, Benedict XVI feels he has a god-given right to interfere in politics in all nations.  Through the frigid mask of the Roman Catholic bishops of the USA, the Roman Catholic Church announced an inquisition into the Girl Scouts to get to the bottom of its association with morally suspect groups like Doctors without Borders and Oxfam.  The vile arm of the Roman Catholic Church is investigating the Girl Scouts because of the Girl Scouts alleged support for reproductive rights and freedom of choice for women.  Nationally, American Roman Catholic nuns are being charged with subversion as the villainous Vatican ordered a “doctrinal investigation” of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious.  The organization represents approximately 80 percent of American nuns, and can be sanctioned since they are a Roman Catholic organization.  The Girl Scouts are not affiliated with the cantankerous Church of Rome and are not welcome for promoting safe-sex and not abstinence.

The malevolent Vatican has bared its fangs frantically against Doctors without Borders because the administer medicine not ministry and offer equal care to all people.  The Roman Catholic hierarchy harangues the group because it not only supports the right of a woman to elect an abortion but states its willingness to offer therapeutic abortions without cost to the poor of the world.  Oxfam was denigrated by the Roman Catholic episcopacy and Ratzinger because it offers food to women who had abortions.  Yet the Roman Catholic Church gets over a billion Euros in property tax exemption to spread its hate and deny human rights worldwide.

Roman Catholic bishops in the USA, with the most notoriously sinister located in the Midwest, especially in Iowa with Bishop R. Walker Nickless of Sioux City, Iowa taking the most extreme stand calling it a line to vote on, Minnesota led by Archbishop John Nienstedt of Saint Paul & Minneapolis, and Wisconsin Bishop David Ricken of Green Bay who have long been against the US Bill of Rights when it comes to free choice, and Indiana’s Father Sammie Maletta of St. John the Evangelist Parish in St. John, who argues that the Roman Catholic Church has a right to instruct its followers on how to vote and live as a sign of religious liberty (funded by the Republican controlled Heritage Foundation; for more on this lie read here), and the majority (98%) of Roman Catholic women use contraceptives; and Obama won the majority of the Roman Catholic vote: 52% – 45%), that are cavalierly cannibalized by crass clergy, have been one of the major forces attacking Obamacare, filing lawsuits arguing that non-church Catholic employers should be able to decide whether or not employee health insurance plans will cover contraception. This is an unfurled and effective argument that a woman’s employer should be allowed to force her to pay more for medical coverage, or even place it out of her reach altogether, based on his religious beliefs. It is rank misogyny and gynophobia richly rendered by Benedict XVI and his gaggle of gospel geese that has little if any knowledge of what the original scrolls contain.  The Roman Catholic Church in the USA does not speak for all Roman Catholics in the USA.

In Australia, Roman Catholic clerics derailed police investigations of accused pedophile  priests.  The Australian Roman Catholic episcopacy has escalated putting pressure on higher-ups to get investigating officer removed from cases, especially in the case of the Rev. Frank Klep (read more here).

A direct assault on academic freedom occurs daily within the Roman Catholic Church and its schools, especially at San Augustine’s in Chiclayo (where I taught) and Lima, Perú, and the various Opus Dei schools, such as Colegios Cibos and  Fontanar, throughout Peru (it took over the Pontifical University in Lima to make it more “church oriented; Opus Dei runs Universidad de Piura, destroying its academic freedom and creating robots of its student body) are mindless institutions where obedience is more critical than objectivity, and where indoctrination is considered more worthwhile than is investigation and education.  Opus Dei schools have the singular intent of taking over the world and refashioning it in a way identical Hitler’s goal of controlling Europe and beyond (for the Spanish, read here), its crimes, especially in Perú, are legendary as it spins its tangled web throughout Nigeria and the rest of Africa. Far from being “spiritually based” its hidden agenda is to make as much money as possible and with it rule; its main apologist is Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, and has negligible difference from the group in Dan Brown’s DaVinci Code. The Roman Catholic Church demanded that Sunday school teachers sign a loyalty oath agreeing to submit “will and intellect” to the proclamations of church leaders (read here, and rational is here and here).

Some top church officials, including the current pope, have advocated denying communion to politicians who support progressive and pro-choice political ideas.  As occurred in the days of US Senator Joseph McCarthy (R-WI) who was openly controlled by the Roman Catholic Church in the USA, through the priest Edmund Walsh (when McCarthy died, over 100 priests met for the funeral mass and urged the Wisconsin senator to be declared a saint for his pursuit against “communism” and “enemies of religion” in which we find the foundation stones for Opus Dei and other organized hate groups) the Roman Catholic Church in the USA openly opposed President Barrack Obama on his social stands for the liberty of all and the right of choice (read here and here).  Throughout its petrified parsimonious past pushing to the present and into the future, the Roman Catholic Church also opposes preemptive war and the death penalty, no conservative politician has ever been denied communion on this basis.

Nuns on the bus (USA)

Nuns on the bus (USA)

From the bishops of New York to the most pathetic of patriarchs perched on the platform of religion as Pope Benedict XVI, Roman Catholic clergy have initiated an unprecedented unholy war against the Sisters of the Church (especially for Nuns on the Bus that toured the USA in quest of fairness for everyone) for showing too much compassion and charity to “fallen women”, the poor, victims of rape and violence, and those who seek the end of unwanted fetal tissue generation.   The mentality of the ministers of the faith is nearly Neanderthal in their cracked down on American nuns by Benedict XVI and American cardinals for doing too much to help the poor and not enough to oppose gay marriage, condemning them for displaying a seditious “feminist spirit“.

Tebartz-van Elst, 52, bishop of Limburg

Tebartz-van Elst, 52, bishop of Limburg

In Germany, where parishioners pay an officially assessed tax rate to the church, they’ve tried to blackmail people who don’t want to pay the church tax, threatening to fire them from jobs in church institutions. In some cases, if the person opts out but later loses the paperwork, they demand on-the-spot repayment of decades of back taxes.  Priests and bishops generally live more luxuriant lives than their parishioners and detail that their ministry demands more creature comforts (as with the German bishop Tebartz-van Elst, 52, of Limburg read here and here).

Daniel Jenky bishop of Peoria IL

In the USA, the Roman Catholic bishops are worse than their continental compatriots.  They have compared Democratic officeholders, including President Obama, to Hitler and Stalin (read here for the comments of Bishop Daniel Jenky of Peoria, Illinois; cp. here for those made by Bishop Thomas John Paprocki from Springfield, Illinois) and have

said that it jeopardizes a person’s eternal salvation if they don’t vote as the bishops instruct them to vote.  They are supported by the most evil encampment of enemies to the US Constitution and to freedom: the Becket Foundation, a far-right group organized to fight any separation of state and church (read here and here) and is a quasi-official arm of the Roman Catholic Church and the Republican Party.

Benedict XVI and Roman Catholic bishops fight against equal marriage rights for same-sex couples. Not only does the Catholic Church hierarchy refuse to officially perform church weddings for gay and lesbian couples (many priests do perform them privately or semi-privately and I have attended two of them); they want to write that prohibition into the civil law and deny marriage equality to everyone who doesn’t fit their religious criteria.  The Roman Catholic Church as a single entity, plus various bishoprics and archbishoprics has invested vast amounts of money and effort into doing so. In the 2012 election cycle alone, the church spent almost $2 million in an unsuccessful fight to defeat marriage-equality initiatives in four states amounting to more than $11.3 million from donations to the church by parishioners but without getting any parishioner’s consent for the expenditure

Like many evangelical ministers who, when not wife-swapping or having boyfriends and boy toys on the side, Roman-Catholic bishops and clergy are kept busy  comparing gay sex to pedophilia and incest and called for it to be forbidden by law, saying that “states can and must regulate behaviors, including various sexual behaviors.”  These accusations continue even though 10,969 Roman Catholic clergy in the USA admit to being pedophiles.

The fear of homosexuality that is rampant throughout the Roman Catholic (studies do not agree as to numbers, but estimates are between 23% – 58%; read here), Orthodox (there are no studies since most priests refuse interviews or paper surveys, but the various churches from Russian to Bulgarian, Ukrainian, etc argue that homosexuality is a sin and one who is homosexual cannot be a priest) and various Protestant ministerial groups (it is accepted in the ELCA of the Lutheran Church but not the Missouri or Wisconsin synods), has led especially Roman Catholic organizations, on strict order by the Vatican, to  shut down adoption clinics rather than consider gay people as prospective parents. The church’s quasi-official position is that it’s better for children to remain orphans or in foster care than to be placed in a loving, committed same-sex household (here and here and here for the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychology based on scientific studies).

Matthew-Shepard-Scholars, of the Diocese of Davenport, Iowa: The Eychaner Foundation

More gruesome is the Roman Catholic Church’s stand against any gay group that is working to end Church and School efforts to ban any anti-LGBT bullying group, anti-teen-suicide foundation from any Catholic school ceremony.  The Roman Catholic Church explained it that the group’s mission is “contrary to the teachings of the Catholic church” as was the case in

Martin J. Amos, 8th bishop of Davenport, Iowa

Martin J. Amos, 8th bishop of Davenport, Iowa

Davenport, Iowa, where its bishop, Martin Amos, retread to fifteenth century thought trumpeted by the Inquisition of the Roman Catholic Church suffering under its most corrupt pedophile popes in its ecclesiastical history in denouncing the group at Prince of Peace Catholic School.  Sectarian politics played a major role in this attack on human freedoms, when the prelate complained that unspecified groups awarding scholarships were not in accord with Roman Catholic Church teachings, then backtracked by noting that both the Roman Catholic Church and the scholarship were against bullying and defamation of character.  This issue had not arisen in any previous statement nor at any earlier time.  It came out only when one Roman Catholic high school

Keaton Fuller received a Matthew Sheperd scholarship, initially rejected by the archdiocese of Davenport.

senior Keaton Fuller, Clinton, Iowa, won a $40,000 scholarship named after martyred Matthew Shepard who was tied to a fence with barbed wire in Wyoming and left to die for being gay.

On April 27, 2012, the Diocese intervened and told the recipient that a member of the would not be permitted to present the award at graduation, but that it would be presented by a school staff member in fear that some molecules from the award would infect the other graduates and turn them gay. The bishop, Martin J. Amos, through the diocese office, issued a statement that it was a “long-standing policy” regarding guest speakers that the school “cannot allow anyone or any organization which [sic] promotes a position that is contrary to the teachings of the Catholic Church to present at a diocesan institution”.  The Des Moines Register later printed:

Fuller and the Eychaner Foundation’s founder, Rich Eychaner, both thanked Bishop Amos for finding an acceptable resolution. The script to be read on graduation day will say the scholarship ‘is granted to distinguished Iowa high school seniors who are openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender’ and that Fuller ‘gradually shared his story with friends and classmates … and was embraced by the Prince of Peace community.

“ ‘As I leave Prince of Peace, it’s comforting to know that this experience may make it easier for the next gay student who attends this school,’ Fuller said in a statement issued Friday. ‘Please know that this week has not been about me. Rather, it has been about recognizing that everybody deserves to be treated equally, regardless of any differences we may have.’ ”

The Roman Catholic Council of USA Bishops is even more reactionary that Iowa’ Bishop Ames, with many of the bishops self-confessed pedophiles.  They told a teenager he wouldn’t be allowed to go through confirmation because he posted a pro-gay-rights status message on Facebook, and they expelled a preschooler from a private Catholic school because his parents were lesbians. This was true both in Grand Forks and throughout Minnesota

Rachel Mike, who won a settlement in a case involving Father Poole, at her confirmation in the summer of 1975. Behind her is Father George Endal, accused of raping or molesting several boys and allegedly walking in on another priest performing oral sex on a 6-year-old boy and doing nothing to stop it.

$166 million (the third largest settlement to sex abuse survivors who were Native Americans and Alaskan natives, boys and girls, who were abused by priests at Catholic schools throughout Alaska and the Pacific Northwest.  The settlement covered more than 450 victims raped by Jesuit priests of the Roman Catholic Church.  Most rapes occurred in remote villages and on reservations, and when the Jesuits filed for bankruptcy in 2009, the victims responded noting that the province remained wealthy because it controls and owns Gonzaga University, Gonzaga Preparatory School, Seattle University and other schools and properties with Opus Dei prevalent in most institutions. The Jesuits made Alaska a “pedophile paradise“.

Timothy cardinal Dolan (New York City) pedophile cover-up in Milwaukee and NYC

Timothy cardinal Dolan (New York City) pedophile cover-up in Milwaukee and NYC

To cover-up their own pedophile propensities and seduction of women, the Roman Catholic Council of Bishops in the USA have a history of dumping known pedophile priests in isolated, poor, rural communities, where they apparently assumed that local people wouldn’t dare to complain or that no one would listen if they did.   Adding insult to injury, the attackers of the victims were give payouts  — as much as $20,000 in some cases — to pedophile priests, to buy their silence and quietly ease them out of the priesthood, after specifically denying in public that they were doing this with such payouts being orchestrated and pushed by New York City Timothy cardinal Dolan (read here) who was, then, archbishop of Milwaukee.

When the legislature of the State of Connecticut proposed extending statute-of-limitations laws to allow older child-abuse cases to be tried, the bishops of Connecticut ordered a letter to be read during Mass instructing parishioners to contact their representatives and lobby against it.  The bishops claimed that they were worried about frivolous lawsuits.  To fight back against and intimidate abuse-survivor groups like SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests), the church’s lawyers have filed absurdly broad subpoenas demanding the disclosure of decades’ worth of documents.

Bill Donahue of the Catholic League against SNAP

Bill Donahue of the Catholic League against SNAP

William Donahue, an arch-conservative Roman Catholic, calls SNAP “a menace to the Catholic Church” for exposing rampant pedophiles in its membership.  While Donahue argues that the bishops are in league together to fight charges, the US Council of Catholic Bishops has rejected such a claim.

Similar problems occurred throughout the USA. No diocese was exempt.

Monsignor William Lynn kept predators in ministry in Philadelphia

Monsignor William Lynn kept predators in ministry in Philadelphia

When Monsignor William Lynn, a Catholic official from Philadelphia, was charged with knowingly returning predator priests to duty, his defense was to blame those decisions on his superior, Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua (read here about Romano Ferraro, and here for Father Peter J. Dunn who was judged “a very sick man” and was psychoanalyzed as an untreatable pedophile, and a narcissist with an obsessive-compulsive personality disorder; and here for Rev. Stanley Gana who collected nude photographs of his victims) ultimately judged competent to stand trial.  His statement acknowledged that the corruption reaches to the highest levels of the church.

Forcible castrations were justified as a means to keep youth from homosexuality and to punish young males who were not "cooperative".

Forcible castrations were justified as a means to keep youth from homosexuality and to punish young males who were not “cooperative”.

In the Netherlands, ten boys were castrated in church-run hospitals after complaining to the police about sexual abuse by priests (many young males were castrated on orders from bishops who feared they were homosexuals, and were told that castration cures a male of homosexual tendencies).  The archbishop used the same excuse as given by the Nazis to justify his silence.  Several months later, it was reported that this same cardinal had personally arranged to move a pedophile priest to a different parish to shield him from accusations.

Ad cardinal Simmons of Utrecht transferred a paedophile priest to a parish in Amersfoort where the priest repeatedly sexually abused children

Ad cardinal Simmons of Utrecht transferred a paedophile priest to a parish in Amersfoort where the priest repeatedly sexually abused children

While he was Archbishop of Utrecht, Cardinal Ad Simonis shielded a paedophile priest.  This was neither the first nor the last time that the Church in the Netherlands covered paedophiles, both priests and nuns.

Even alleged saints have been implicated in sex abuse cases.  In one case, Mother Teresa successfully persuaded the church to return a later convicted pedophile priest, Father Donald McGuire, to duty because he was a friend of hers (read here and here). Eight additional complaints of child abuse were later lodged against Father Donald McGuire, justifying Christopher Hitchens original indictment of the Albanian born nun in his 1997 book, The Missionary Position: Mother Teresa in Theory and Practice (London and New York: Verso, 1995). Among other “oversights” Teresa had set up a worldwide system of “homes for the dying” that routinely failed to provide adequate care to patients.

Kaligat (Mother Theresa's home for sick and dying, Calcutta)

Kaligat (Mother Theresa’s home for sick and dying, Calcutta)

There is money to be made by the Roman Catholic Church is raising dead people to sainthood, as with Mother Teresa.  They canonized Mother Teresa for doing little more than offering a squalid place for people to die; it was called Kaligat; starvation is one of the main sources of death, despite that there is an abundance of food for those who can pay for it, next to none is given in charity, with children being the primary victims). Outside observers who visited her “Home for the Dying” reported that medical care was substandard and dangerous, limited to aspirin and unsterilized needles rinsed in tap water, administered by untrained volunteers. The millions of dollars collected by Mother Teresa and her order, enough to build many advanced clinics and hospitals remain unaccounted for.

Father Martin P. O'Loghlen

Father Martin P. O’Loghlen

Never troubled by appointing pedophiles to church offices, the Roman Catholic Church appointed Martin O’Loghlen, to a church-run sexual abuse advisory board – even though O’Loghlen himself was a known abuser who molested a teenage girl, Julie Malcom (she later filed legal action against him), in the 1960s and admitted to having a “sexual addiction”.  When this was discovered, it was poorly veiled, still the Roman Catholic Church had the audacity to plead for money and ask parishioners to pick up the tab for legal costs and settlements.

The Australian and New Zealand nuns in the Roman Catholic Church followed precedents established in Europe, especially in Ireland, by its nuns and priests abducting  tens of thousands of babies from unwed mothers who gave birth in Catholic-run hospitals all.  They also forced drugged or helpless women to give their newborn children up for adoption against their will.

The list is endless.  The atrocities, barbarities and evil of the Roman Catholic Church is tantamount to the disdain and disregard of all other churches including the Russian Orthodox Church and its attack on dissent in the case with Pussy Riot.  Like the Taliban and Islamic extremists, the Roman Catholic Church also strangles dissent and dissenters (literally and metaphorically) as when it tried to have the Indian skeptic Sanal Edamuruku charged with blasphemy and imprisoned for debunking a claim of a miraculous weeping statue (read here and here and here and here).

The Roman Catholic Church’s finances are a disorganized mess.  The operate their own bank with ATMs, all mired in money laundering, but lack strong accounting controls and clear internal separations, which means parishioners who give to the church can have no assurance of what the money will be used for.  According to an investigation by the Economist, funds meant for hospitals, cemeteries and priests’ pensions have been raided to pay legal fees and settlements in several diocesan bankruptcies.

Vatican ATM is in Latin

Vatican ATMs are in Latin

The Roman Catholic Church is one large scandal and at the top of this scandal is the bankrupt papacy, the worse in history: Benedict XVI is implicated with two top associates in money laundering.  His life-size portrait hangs over all ATMs with all instructions for use in Latin.  Benedict XVI has never been a saint, as new information surfaces on the predatory pope daily (read here and here and here where Ratzinger is given the title of God’s Rottweiler, while placing “the devil” (not the pedophile priest) as the source of evil in child abuse cases).

Stop supporting the church with your money and your time. Such action, however it may seem is more than justified by a cornucopia of reasons showing that the church as an institution is beyond reform, and the only meaningful response is to part ways with it and let it die in the filth of its pedophile priests, greed for enrichment of a few while millions starve, and the lack of a mission to truly educate rather than indoctrinate new generations of soon-to-be Roman robots.

Psychology of Suicide and Bullying–and how religion, school/classmates and family affect both

Katherine van Wormer, MSSW, PhD and Chuk Odiah, M.Sc, PhD of the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, presented a study on suicide-murder and the death penalty, in 1999 (van Wormer, Katherine and Odiah, Chuk (1999). “The Psychology of Suicide-Murder and the Death Penalty” in Journal of Criminal Justice, 27(4), pp. 361-370). The UNI professors detail suicide to be not only a violent act but an act that is frequently the result of violence.

Violence is perpetrated by bullies: parents, children, religious and government figures, schools (teachers, principals, classmates, and so forth) and at the workplace by coworkers, supervisors, bosses, and owners.  Violence is also the weapon used by others who wish to appear and take on the trappings of authorities.

Bullying leads some people to commit violent acts against others in quest of paying the supreme penalty for their actions: “Suicide, in other words, [is] not as the consequence of murder but, rather, … its cause”, van Wormer and Odiah claim.  Those who want to die, but are afraid of the believed pain in suicide, will seek out someone to kill them: either by putting themselves in harm’s way, paying an assassin, killing another person in hopes that law enforcement officials will end their existence, or killing and then taking their own life in fear that state retribution could be more painful.

As I noted in my earlier book, Evangelical Terrorism, suicides and violence are especially prevalent among fundamentalists groups and those that preach hatred is peace and tolerance is weakness, as found in Islam, Pentecostalism, The FAMiLY, and Latter Day Saints and is increased among evangelical fundamentalists to the point that they form a psychological dictatorship that destroys hope and personal self-esteem (Ide, Arthur Frederick (1986). Evangelical Terrorism: censorship, Falwell, Robertson, & the Seamy side of Christian Fundamentalism. Irving, TX, USA: Scholars Books).  Religion, while many psychologists have not commented on it because they have not studied it and its effect on others, is one of the greatest tools for subordination of people and the illusion(s) it fosters can weigh heavily leading many into reprehensible acts or violence, as with the jihad movement in Islam and Christian terrorists in India, Norway, and elsewhere.

Suicide is never the “coward’s way out” as popular legend has it–suicide takes courage.  It is not an action that is haphazard nor accidental.  It is not committed rashly, or suddenly.  It is premeditated, and is usually a response to violence that the victim can no longer endure, or is the product of neglect. The suicide victim sees no alternative and no place to go as the family, church, school, and coworker offers no understanding, help, or proffer solutions, and as said earlier, usually are the reason for the suicide.

Bullying in groups

Most young suicide victims take their own lives because they feel estranged and left-out of a significant circle of others, or are harassed and ridiculed by others for any number of reasons, as I will detail.

Those who ultimately commit suicide frequently see themselves as outcasts.  Older students bully younger students; better built students bully those who are frail and appear unable to take care of themselves.  Older girls will bully younger boys: especially within families where the older child is the girl and the victim is a second son who appears as a threat to the ranking order of the siblings, since in many families there was a partiality or preference for a male child. The same is true if the first-born is a boy, the second born is a girl, and the third and subsequent are either gender but when the first-born is a boy, the boy tends to look upon others within the family as rivals unless the family unit treats all children equitably.  It is a primitive animalistic form known as a “pecking order” as is common with poultry and other animals where the senior member retains control rights by pecking at new members of the group or those introduced into the group without the consent of the leader.  Alfred Adler, who worked with Sigmund Freud, called it Ichgebundenheit.

Older children will bully younger children

When the suicide victim feels abandoned or neglected by his or her family there is ans increased potentiality and possibility of the lowering of self-esteem in the estimation of the one contemplating suicide.  If the one contemplating suicide believes that he or she is ostracized by a religious, fraternal or familial group, or is being bullied by someone who feels that by bullying another he or she is superior (whereas in reality they are suffering from an inferiority complex) the potential suicide victim withdraws more from the family or fraternal circle, finds escape in cyberspace and makes “friends” (acquaintances) who can be imaginary or implants by those who oppose the individual and desire that he or she commits suicide.

Stronger and larger people will bully weaker and smaller people

Suicide is seen as a way of escape, as well as a way of asserting the victim’s final right of control over the self and to leave the confines of the primary unit: the family, church, school, or group, which the future suicide victim  internalizes, consciously (openly), subconsciously, or unconsciously as a way of fighting the bully by depriving the bully of his or her conquest over the victim.  The victim of bullying is afraid to, justifiably, strike out and hit the bullying parent, grandparent, son or daughter, niece or nephew, uncle or aunt, religious leader, teacher, or classmate regardless of age, gender or physical condition of the bully.  The idea of “respecting one’s elders” and “authority figures” has been ingrained by all religions as a way of maintaining their hold over the congregant (e.g. Sirach 3:1, ‘Mata Pita Guru Daivam’ in Hinduism, Exodus 20:12, Koran 4:36 and 6:151, Ephesians 6:12), but none of the world’s religions consider the reality that some parents are bad people, hurt and harm their children (Abraham did attempt to slay his own son: Genesis 22:5, Koran 37:100-111, a prototype for John 3:16, where god demands that Abraham “sacrifice a son” to him) to the point where the child commits suicide (it is a statistic that 44% of all suicides are the result of abuse at home; while the statistics vary from 60-90% accusing the father as being less sympathetic, especially in Australia, there is little mention of the social climate the father was brought up in, as in most patriarch societies, the male is taught to be aggressive and violent).  By not striking back as some victims are now doing by learning judo and other self-defense techniques including carrying pepper spray or weapons (read here and here and here and here), suicide becomes the last resort, especially when the future suicide victim believes that his or her religion rejects protestations against bullies if they are in the family or the religious center.  This is equally true when the person contemplating suicide is castigated or slammed because of a perceived lifestyle that is labeled as being outside the scope of what the faith has codified as acceptable and there is no one to talk to about personal matters.

Bullying by grade level (USA)

The rise in cases of bullying are getting more notice.  There are new studies and demographics illustrating this paralyzing phenomena.

Bullying can be emotional or psychological as well as physical.

Until recently, few have looked at the bully and what motivates bullying. The bully is anyone: a parent, classmate, religious figure, sibling, etc. Because bullies are found in every walk of life, every vocation, every religion and social outlet, it is critical to understand the psychology of a bully if we are to better understand the psychology of the person committing suicide.

A bully is any individual struggling for attention, authority, and sadistically revels in causing emotional, psychological, and/or physical pain. The bully can be a narcissistic bully, imitative bully, impulsive bully, accidental bully.  What they have in common is low self-esteem and the desire to control–which is the reason for such bully organizations as Opus Dei (international, but originally started in Spain) and the Tea Party in the USA. This is especially true among religions seeking absolute control over the individual as occurred in the Roman Catholic Spanish Inquisition that led to the death of millions and thrives to this day in such nefarious groups as Opus Dei, Councils of Bishops or Elders, one-dimensional religious groups such as  the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Church (WELS), Pentecostalism, Mormons and evangelical communities such as within the New Apostolic Reformation of the twenty-first century.  It is found from Poland to Peru, the USA to UK, Canada to Chad, and throughout the world.

With today’s advances in technology, sadism of the bully is made easier.  Sadism is a mental disease (Holt, S. E., Meloy, J. R., & Strack, S. (1999). “Sadism and psychopathy in violent and sexually violent offenders”. Journal of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. vol 27(1) 1999, 23-32), and most sadists are mentally ill, especially those who use religion as a cover for their hatred and bullying: seeking pleasure by creating, watching, and continuing suffering in those who submit to their cruelty (Kernberg, O. F. (1983). “Paranoid regression, sadistic control, and dishonesty in transference.” Revista de Psicoanalisis Vol 40(2) Mar-Apr 1983, 323-328; Lloyd, D. W. (1991). “Ritual child abuse: Understanding the controversies”.  Cultic Studies JournalVol 8(2) 1991, 122-133; and, Radomski, J., & Sulestrowska, H. (1988). “Aggressive-sadistic behavior as a major symptom in schizophrenic psychosis in a 13-year-old boy”.  Psychiatria Polska vol 22(3) May-Jun 1988, 269-271; the role that sadism plays in religion is acute, especially in such sadistic groups as Opus Dei; cf. Sorensen, A. (2003). “Evil between ontology and inner experience – Georges Bataille”. Psyke & Logosvol 24(1) 2003, 361-389, and Hammand, J. (2000). “The Rod of Discipline: Masochism, Sadism, and the Judeo-Christian Religion,” Journal of Religion and Health. vol. 39.4,  pp. 319-328, as found in Proverbs 13:24, and enjoined by such sadists as the Roman Catholic church–especially Opus Dei, Martin Luther (Luther, Werk 54:157, 234-235, in German) and Jean Calvin (who defined anyone who rebelled against religious authority as a child, and decreed that “children can be executed” for rebellion, with young children being hanged, and very young children being hanged by the arms; Picot, History of Geneva, in 8 vols., t. II, p. 264, p. 355, cf. Robert M. Kingdon, Adultery and Divorce in Calvin’s Geneva. Cambridge, MA, USA: Harvard University Press, 1995, pp. 355-357 seq; Calvin also demanded the death sentence for adultery and blasphemy: “Sur les paillardises, adulteres, blasphemes, juremens et despitemens de Dieu”), most Protestant groups, and Islam, and hate groups such as Focus on the Family and the state legislature of Michigan). Today’s bullies can cause irreparable mental anguish and suffering by spewing hate messages on the internet: the most common means of choice being Facebook, MySpace, or other popular sites.

What is a bully?

The bully has a distinctive pattern of deliberately harming and humiliating others in order to get what the bully wants: attention, subjugation of others to order them around as he or she wishes, adulation, and reverence.  To this end the greatest bullies in the world are members of the clergy, and those who claim to be defending “the faith”, who insist on a common lifestyle of and among the faithful, with the leaders of religions being the most bellicose, braying “you must stay married even if your partner has no love for you,” “you must marry to keep the precepts of god to ‘go forth, be fruitful, multiply,” “you must carry an unwanted zygote/fetus even if it is the product of rape, incest, has little to no chance for survival, or will be complete at the time of its birth,” and so forth (cp. Chernus, Ira (2006). Monsters to Destroy: the Neoconservative War on Terror and Sin. Boulder, CO, USA: Paradigm Publishers).

Realities of bullying

Religion, in most cases is a shield to protect the sadism of the bully.  Those who bully in the name of religion use their assorted scripture to justify their actions.  They claim that what they want, their deity also wants. The bully sees himself or herself as the hand of god–a god of raw vengeance and cruelty whose will must be done if there is to be peace on the planet (cp. Luke 22:42 and Psalm 40:7-8).  Furthermore, the bully uses the idea of his or her god as his or her way of spreading the faith, being obedient to the faith, and having unquestioned loyalty to the faith: the basic foundation of the most odious and opportunistic organization known as Opus Dei.

Opus Dei New Hampshire protesting abortion

Abortion is among the favored bully clubs of the conservative religious, especially among the Roman Catholic hierarchy where none of the men could become pregnant (if they could, as I have written earlier, abortion would be proclaimed a sacrament), but still belt out “No abortion!” This mantra is ministered to those without measure, regardless if it is a child who has been repeatedly raped by a family member, or been sexually assaulted

Children abandoned on streets of Peru

by a classmate, teacher, religious official, or any other person—even though carrying the fetus to term can irreparably scar the student emotionally and psychologically. Children who are raped and become pregnant are abandoned on the streets of towns and cities, from Los Angeles, California to Lima, Peru–and beyond (The Consortium for Street Children’s State of the World’s Street Children: Violence report (2007) p. 17).  While the “Pro-Life” forces want to “protect the unborn” they do nothing to help it once it is born and, in the case of Roman Catholic countries, abandon the baby and the mother to poverty and life in the street–with the sole source of income frequently being prostitution, but the infant, if it survives its early years, is set to work in bazaars and open air markets.  The churches, schools, and communities do nothing but bully the abandoned children, especially those who become pregnant, by screaming “No abortion.” Those who are born have little chance of any future in any nation, and are subject to bullying.

Abandoned girl working in market in Peru

Many poor, around the world, turn to drugs before contemplating suicide.

Glue sniffing in Peru

While drugs are expensive, they can be stolen, purchased with prostitution, or found in inexpensive formats, such as glue sniffing that is becoming increasingly popular among the poor in Latin America and other Roman Catholic controlled countries.

Bullies seek out those who lack assertiveness and radiate fear—telltale signs that bullies gravitate to in the same manner as sadists and masochists find each other.  After religion and religious leaders, the second greatest number of bullies comes from within the family: with the bullies being older siblings in most cases.  Sex is often a criteria, with older siblings worried that younger ones will masturbate and will either encourage or take the child to a prostitute—the reason being that the sin of Onan was masturbation (it was coitus interruptus: Genesis 38:8-10), while prostitution is referenced repeatedly in the Old Testament, even with Onan’s father having sex with his daughter-in-law in Genesis 38:15-16, and so forth).  The story of Onan and his “sin” has become a mainstay for Opus Dei.

Opus Dei is the greatest and most powerful organized hate group in the world, its tentacles reaching out and controls schools around the world, strangling personal identities and suffocating the flicker of democracy and freedom, teaching hate and doing nothing to counter bullying.  It continues to live the story of Judah and his whoring ways while distorting reality and rifling in on human sexuality as a target to control people.

In Perú bullying is especially common in Opus Dei colegios, and in other religious schools—where celibacy and virginity are preached as admirable goals but seldom practiced and little is said unless a girl comes to class pregnant (some as young as the age of ten and eleven)—and then to be bullied for becoming pregnant while at the same time denied an abortion or offered comfort if the fertilized zygote/fetus is the result of rape or (more commonly) incest.  When I taught, for a short time, at one of the more exclusive Roman Catholic secondary schools in Lambayeque Province in Peru, it was common to hear 12 and 13 year-old girls warn female classmates that if they did not have sex with boys they would not be allowed to participate in their groups.  Those who refused the orders barked out by the wealthier students were hounded both on the patios and open areas, chided as being lesbians, and were physically attacked: their hair pulled, stomachs punched, and notes slipped to them urging them to commit suicide; when I reported this to the principal—who has since been transferred to Rome—the religious Order in charge of the school did nothing.  The priest only nodded and returned to his prayers.

When I complained to those who claimed to be psychologists, I was informed “it is the culture, here” and instructed to say nothing.  Sexuality was far higher than contraceptive use because of religious leaders’ disapproval, and it was not on infrequent occasions that I would enter the restroom to find students from ages 12 to 18 engaged in sexual acts.

After reminding students who were openly fondling one another during a video in the library that such action was inappropriate behavior and I would not accept it, I was denounced by the students as being against “our culture” as such action “is better than homosexuality.”  There is such an overwhelming fear of homosexuality, with the Biblical story of Onan being used as an example of incorrect sexual activity, that anyone who is not involved in heterosexual sex is automatically ridiculed, bullied and, as I heard on numerous occasions, told that they would “be better off dead”—statements that brought a rigid orthodoxy of concurrence from the priests.

The cruelty of bullying in school

Students who did not conform to the sexual code of the school had their lockers vandalized, obscene graffiti sprayed on the doors and on their personal belongings, books destroyed, and material stolen.  This matched what I had heard at other parochial (basically Roman Catholic, but equally prevalent in Baptist, Adventist, and other Protestant centers), private, and secular schools, and was intense at public schools. More than 70% of all students (85% female, 60% male) had gone through this form of sexual harassment and bullying, with teachers and classmates equally prone to bullying those believed to be “virgins”.  While I was teaching in the provinces, the same was common in Lima, but the percentage was higher in the shanty towns surrounding the capital city–especially in the public schools where education is at best a farce (the teachers are unprepared, their educational background minimal, their understanding of engaging students nonexistent, and their purpose for teaching was to earn money), as demonstrated when Antonio Chang, then Minister of Education, tested 300,000 teachers in 2005, and only 151 barely passed (surprisingly, 76% of the population approved of the testing).  I quit within a few days and began publishing on corruption in Perú’s education system and schools and universities.

The twisted standards on human sexuality were everywhere I taught: not to be engaged in heterosexual sex brought bullying, becoming pregnant presaged bullying, and seeking out and possibly obtaining an abortion did not assuage the bullying but intensified it frequently leading to the rape/incest victim to committing suicide even though abortion to save a woman’s life is technically legal although Cipriani (a close friend and supporter of the Peruvian dictator Fujimori and his daughter Keiko and son Hiro, as Cipriani’s goal has always been total and complete control over all of Peru; read Footnote 1, below) continues to chortle that such an abortion is murder (while the cardinal has been investigated as an accomplice in murder in Lima, and regularly interferes with the private life of all Peruvians—including non-Catholics) even if the carrier of the fetus dies (there are between 350,000 and 400,000 abortions each year in Peru) and is supported by 53% of the people polled, there is the other side that notes: Este tipo de discrepancias revelan las verdaderas intenciones de la ley. [Such discrepancies reveal the true intentions of the law. … control the ability of women to make decisions about her body. We allow abortions to be carried out, but not in an open manner because that would give too much freedom to women in a decision that we feel that affects the sustainability of society] also read here.  The youngest female became a mother at age five

Women in Peru protest in favor of abortion

Watch what happens in Peru here: http://vimeo.com/15606635 given the current ignorance of Carlos Alberto Tejada Noriega, Head of the Ministry of Health in Peru.  It is past time to say no to the Roman Catholic church that is destroying Peru and Latin America by its antiquated and illogical ideology that is not supported by medical science.  Bans on abortion risk the lives of women and increase poverty: twin goals sought by Lima’s cardinal Cipriani and Opus Dei.  In Peru and Latin America, religion is the greatest and most deadly bully with the bully club swung against the young by Opus Dei and Lima’s Juan Luis Cipriani.

Josemaria Escriva (founder of Opus Dei)

Opus Dei uses sex, intimidation, religion and its assorted paranoia of promises of perdition and persecution in this world and “the next” as a means to control its members and those people with whom its members associate.  The leaders of Opus Dei have declared war on dissent, demand censorship of books, magazines, articles, even open forums at universities.  While Dan Brown’s book The Da Vinci Code is fiction, the account of Opus Dei is based on fact (read Footnote 2, below), including the claim that scruples and traditional values are to be rejected if it can lead to converting anyone to “the faith” and self-flagellation required of believers, while the flagitious founder of Opus Dei—Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer y Albás (9 January 1902 – 26 June 1975) who had the support and endorsement of Karol Józef Wojtyła—the agathokakological man who would become Pope John Paul II and was instrumental in declaring Escriva a saint as a political move depraved of any charitable characteristics—wrote in his book The Way that the faithful will use secrecy to obtain end results (The Way, No. 839), compromise is a form of laziness and weakness (The Way, No. 54), true Roman Catholics must follow blindly “in obedience” all Church teachings (The Way, No. 617 and in 941): “Blind obedience to your superior, the way of sanctity. Obedience in your apostolate, the only way; for, in a work of God, the spirit must be to obey or to leave.” Submission to religious authority is understood to be a good in itself, while calling non-Catholic schools, “pagan schools” (The Way, No.866).  Modern enlightened thinkers, such as Voltaire (The Way, No. 849) were/are instruments of darkness.   Opus Dei is like the Vatican has spent its history on suppressing truth, distorting what was said, and codifying rules to maintain a docile following. Private interpretation of anything is forbidden; students engaged in interpretation must interpret and translate according to the dictates of the Roman Catholic Church. Bullying of those who do not conform or follow The Way is at the forefront, especially if celibacy is determined for a student by a numerary (one of the chosen followers of Opus Dei whose election is foretold: John Allen (2005). Opus Dei: An Objective Look Behind the Myths and Reality of the Most Controversial Force in the Catholic Church. New York, NY, USA: Doubleday Religion; while the complete list of Opus Dei members is not available to the public, some lists do exist).

As corrupt as is Opus Dei, Opus Dei is equally matched in the USA by numerous certified hate groups:  Focus on the Family, The FAMiLY, Americans for Prosperity, Lion and Lamb Ministries, Eagle Forum, and so forth, where bullying is seen as a challenge to “fight back with the gospel” and those who complain are considered weak for not “offering their pain to Jesus.”

The third greatest number is found in the workplace or school (a typical bully is Donald Trump, who was known as a bully since he was age 13).   Bullying in the workplace is on the rise: the bullies being coworkers, supervisors, managers, corporate leaders, and owners (cf. Sperry, Len (ed., 2009). “Workplace Mobbing and Bullying” in Consulting Psychology Journal: Practice and Research. 61.3 (September), pp. 190-201; cp. Kilburg, Richard R. loc. cit., pp. 268-275; and, MacDoanld, Geoff and Jensen-Campbell, Lauri A. (2010), Social Pain: Neuropsychological and Health Implications of Loss and Exclusion. Washington, DC, USA: American Psychological Association).

Women are among the greatest offenders of bullying on the job

Frequently it is “the boss” who is the bully, making unreasonable demands, telephoning the employee at the employee’s home at unusual hours, and requiring evaluations only to ridicule them showing the boss’ insecurity and frequently inability to do the work required, while self-glorifying himself or herself by degrading the individual who does the most, has the greatest talent and offers the soundest solutions that could profit and benefit the company and coworkers.  Forms of workplace bullying include: moving employes without advanced notice,  replacing long-existing contracts with new short-term contracts on less favourable terms with the accompanying threat of “agree to this or else”, increasing workloads, changing work schedules, changing roles and assignments of employees, blocking or terminating career progression paths, making sexual demands, insisting on conformity, requiring “favors” including menial and demeaning tasks. At the same time as bullying is increasing in the workplace, so, too, are workplace suicides, mass murders followed by the killer taking his or her own life.  In Canada, one out of every six people are bullied in the workplace, and for many it is god’s vengeance and the fulfillment of the promise of Opus Dei.  In the USA, 70% of all employees experience bullying at work, while Spain records only 14% report being bullied (but that is because Spanish workers are afraid to come forward and admit to being bullied and have been threatened by employers and the churches if they speak out against bullying, as employers and religious leaders claim that such actions are the will of god).  Most bullied people consider god to be the architect and enforcer of bullying.

Lori Drew and daughter Sarah Drew

Many of those who are bullied are not only bullied at work or in school, but it is increasingly more common to be bullied in cyberspace: over the internet.  Cyberbullying has led to numerous suicides, and the cyber bullies are not just other classmates or coworkers, but their friends and family, as is the case with 50-year-old Lori Drew of Missouri who was found guilty cyberbullying in a federal court for her role in the suicide of 13-year-old Megan Meir (United States vLori Drew, 259 F.R.D. 449 (C.D. Cal. 2009). The judge later acquitted Drew who admitted to her instigating the bullying, claiming that she did it to protect her family and was working to help her daughter Sarah take action against the friend who had decided against remaining a friend of her daughter after transferring to a local Roman Catholic school and had made new friends.  Drew knew Megan Meier personally: the

Megan Meier

young girl lived only four houses down the street from the Drews. This led the Drews to create a fictitious internet lover: Josh Evans.  Drew, who wrote as if she were Josh, wrote to Megan that the world would be a better place if she killed herself–a common ploy among cyber bullies.  Megan, after reading the e-mail from Josh was found a few minutes later having hanged her self in her bedroom closet.  This repeated itself in Missouri when Elizabeth Thrasher (age 41) cyber bullied the 17-year-old daughter of her ex-husband in May 2009 by putting the teenager’s photo, workplace, e-mail address and cell phone number on a section of Craigslist for people seeking sexual encounters.

Suicide is the eleventh largest killer in the USA.  It has equally astonishing statistics worldwide.  No less than one million people succeeding in killing themselves every year around the world. It is the third main reason for deaths among the young: ages 15 to 24, with suicides now occurring even in those who are in their pre-teenage years.  To actually commit suicides depends on factors such as fearlessness and being able to tolerate pain and to act impulsively.  Fearlessness is a conditioned response that leads to enduring abuse: whether from abuse by others or by their own hands, and it grows gradually until the suicide has grown tolerant of physical discomfort but cannot cope with the mental anguish that bullies from the pulpit, at the table, in the classroom or school yard heap out like sewage from their own twisted mentality to torture those least able to understand aspersions and defamation and have no one to whom he or she could turn for succor or for understanding.

Cyber bullying

While most adults age 40-65 turn to suicide as a way to avoid facing financial bankruptcy, job or family loss.  In the USA it is primarily an escape route for men, with in the US is 17.7 per 100,000 among men compared to 4.5 per 100,000 women committing suicide in 2005

Women, more than men, attempt to harm themselves (which is wrongly labeled as attempted suicide) because of living in overcrowded conditions, conflict with their families (extended and internal), with disrupted childhoods, history of drinking, criminal behavior, and violence. Individuals under these stresses become anxious and depressed and then, usually in reaction to a single particular crisis, they attempt to harm themselves and frequently their children.

Bullying statistics

Children commit suicide because they are ridiculed about their weight, size, perceived sexual orientation, or academic and social performance.  Those most responsible for suicide among children are classmates, teachers, and family members.  Religion has its role as well, in child suicides, especially in Islam where children are openly recruited to be suicide bombers to prove their love for their god (Allah).  The rise in child suicides in Muslim lands in the Middle East has grown sharply, with children as young as four and five committing suicide in religious devotion.

Child suicide bomber in Muslim world encouraged by the family

Suicide affects both the victim and those who remain after the death. The most common response is denial.  The immediate family, most commonly, rejects that there was any estrangement within the family, arguing that all were happy and mutually loving, and that the act was not suicidal, but the result of an unfortunate accident.  Research shows the opposite:  the suicides are frequently the result of family bullying: a parent or sibling or other relative attempting to control a weaker member or a member who is different from the bully or the family.  This is commonly the case with a homosexual member who is bullied by heterosexuals in the family into having a “companion” of the opposite gender.

In many Latin and Muslim communities the presumed homosexual family member is taken to a prostitute if a male as early as age ten, or raped if the suspected homosexual is female (Hovey, JD (1999). “Religion and suicidal ideation in a sample of Latin American immigrants.” Psychological Reports 85:171–177; the article further notes fear of religion stops many Latin Americans from completing a suicide attempt). There is no claim within the article that religion is good—or bad—but that fear can control actions, something that all dictators have learned and used against people throughout secular and religious history.  It was fear that sustained and led to the raison d’être for Christian and Arab crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, the Thirty Years War, Adolf Hitler, Idi Amin, the current curia in the Vatican and the protestations of the German pope, and the Latter Day Saints Apostleship.  The same is true if the victim placed himself or herself outside of the family’s religious beliefs, circle, or institution, especially if the victim was homosexual and his or her religion denounced/condemned homosexuality and enjoined reparative therapy (a malpractice that has been denounced by every professional psychological and psychiatric association (cf. Kjaer R., and Selle, M.S. (2004). Tidsskr Nor Laegeforen.  September 23, 124(18):2396, cp. Saocarides, CW and Kaufman, B. (1994). “Reparative Therapy” in American Journal of Psychiatry January 151(1):157-159).

Homosexuality is a major problem of perception.  Orientation is genetic (in a private communication I received from Professor Katherine van Wormer at the University of Northern Iowa, Dr. van Wormer noted that she is not convinced that homosexuality is genetic; as she wrote: I’d say biological; it seems to stem from activity in the mother’s womb. I agree it’s not a choice….; I will do further research on this issue for another article. My thanks to my colleague, as I took an early graduate degree from UNI in 1968, and feel the university to be one of my many homes) and not chosen nor conditioned according to the American Psychiatric Association and all other health organizations.  Homosexual orientation is not a mental disorder. Bigotry (cf. Vedantam S. “Psychiatry ponders whether extreme bias can be an illness.” Washington Post. December 10, 2005: A1; and, Dunbar E. (1997). “The relationship of DSM diagnostic criteria and Gough’s Prejudice Scale: exploring the clinical manifestations of the prejudiced personality.” Cultural Diversity and Mental Health 3:247-257), homophobia, xenophobia, however, are mental disorders (read here and here).

Homophobic bullying in the UK

The individual who commits suicide because he or she is labeled, discriminated against, or bullied as a homosexual may not be homosexual—but the stigma placed on homosexuality through ignorance codified as religion will inspire and encourage some to commit suicide.  This ignorance about homosexuality is especially true in fundamentalist religious movements (especially among Mormons, WELS, Orthodox Jews and Roman Catholics) where parents, religious officials, and family read bad translations of ancient literature and attempt to instill and include the word homosexual within the alleged sacred text—even though the word homosexual was not even coined until the end of the nineteenth century (Albert Philibert Franz von Schrenck-Notzing; Charles Gilbert Chaddock (1895). Therapeutic suggestion in psychopathia sexualis (pathological manifestations of the sexual sense), with especial reference to contrary sexual instinct. Philadelphia, PA, USA: F. A. Davis; it does not appear in any English American Bible before 1973 (New International Version: NIV), and does not appear in any of the original languages: Hebrew, Greek, Latin, etc.).  The cruelest religions in this regard are Judaism, Christianity, and especially Islam and the Latter Day Saints (Mormons), even though homosexuality is not mentioned by name, yes same-sex love is (as with the case of Jonathan and David (1 Samuel 18; if one reads the Bible literally), Ruth and Naomi (Ruth 1:14 seq, cp. Genesis 2:24), and others; Romans 1:26-27 is about shrine prostitution if read in the original and not through a faulty translation, cp. Aristides, Apology Sec. 16, paragraph 2).

Those who reject suicide as a motive to leave torment behind are mistaken.  While Ernest Becker (1973), argued that the human notion of death is strongly psychoanalytical, views the fear of death as a universal phenomenon, this is incorrect, as it implies that all people fear death because of some divine punishment (such as hell) awaiting the suicide or that there might not be an afterlife (Becker, Ernest (1973). The Denial of Death. New York: Free Press).  This ignores the material showing that the suicide victim wants to escape pain and suffering brought on by any degree of bullying: from name calling and erroneous biblical recitations as Dakota Ary preachificated in Fort Worth Texas, or protestations by grandstanding teachers such as Viki Knox of New Jersey who prophesied “eternal damnation” for any member of the LGBT community, to the mealy mincing of reality by Iowa’s religious Fuehrer Bob Vander Plaats—a theocrat seeking the end of democracy in the USA and establishment of a theocracy on the order of Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann,  Rick Santorum and Governor Sam Brownback who converted from evangelical Protestantism to Roman Catholicism are both members of Opus Dei who want a government in the USA on the order of Iran, and others who has no training in theology or psychology (in this quest they are supported by the four USA Opus Dei bishops: Archbishop José Gomez of San Antonio, Archbishop John Myers of Newark, New Jersey, Bishop Robert Finn of Kansas City-St. Joseph in Missouri and Bishop Nicholas Anthony DiMarzio of Brooklyn, New York all who have opposed any anti-bullying legislation or rights for women; there are a total of 24 Opus Dei bishops in the Roman Catholic church.   This has not stopped Vander Plaats who has set himself up as an authority on human emotions and psychophysical identification, justifying the survey that shows that two out of three people in the USA believe that organized religion (churches) actively contribute to suicides among LGBT people even though all religions have homosexuals in their leadership roles from pastors and rabbis to priests and bishops, even in Islam that claims it has no homosexuals (as with Iran) but where Imams and ayatollahs also have mortal sexual desires and needs equal to anyone else.

One point that Becker is correct about is that some suicides are committed as a way to show the world (the family, the religious organization, the community and so forth) that the person committing suicide has strength, fortitude and the ability to carry out a deed: an act of heroism.  However, it is also, at times, a way for the suicide to blame others without resolution to refine, define and establish his or her own identity as a person of self-worth.  If the suicide fails, the individual who sought the solace of death fails to achieve the role and laurel of a hero.  This can lead to further mental illness and/or antisocial behavior.

Those who are either unable or unwilling to end their own life, will kill another in quest of having someone kill them (Thomas, E. (1997, July 28).  “Facing death”.  Newsweek, 20-30. Karwarth, R. (1992, November 7).  Death-his own-was killer’s goal.  Chicago Tribune, 1. Kennedy, D. Homant, R. and Hupp, T (1998), Suicide by Cop, The FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin67, 30-48). In this case, death is the promise of peace.  This is more common among believers in some external force, such as religion, but at the same time those who profess a religion are less likely to commit suicide or seek out ways of exiting life in fear of “other world judgments” and concepts of heaven and hell, than are those without a religious affirmation, confirmation or indoctrination.  Atheists have the least difficulty in committing suicide successfully (Dervic, Kanita; Oquendo, Maria A.; Grunebaum, Michael F.; Ellis, Steve; Burke, Ainsley K; and, Mann, J. John. “Religious Affiliation and Suicide Attempt.” The American Journal of Psychiatry. December 1, 2004, vol. 161. pp. 2303-2308).  However, one must be cautious when using this statistic as the authors note, as religious countries, especially those that are controlled by the Roman Catholic Church under-report suicides because of the stigma the Roman Catholic Church attaches to suicide (cp. Kelleher MJ, Chambers D, Corcoran P, Williamson E, Keeley HS: “Religious sanctions and rates of suicide worldwide.” Crisis 1998; 19:78–86).  A more accurate reporting, although still under-reporting is found in the World Health Organization (WHO) of the United Nations (UN), where Roman Catholic countries are showing a greater number of suicides since 2003. The lowest rate of suicides, evidence shows, is in Islamic controlled nations, such as Malay, where Islam strictly forbids suicides, and an attempt at suicide can bring capital punishment and the death sentence that carries a stigma to the family as a whole. Again the problem is religion as Islamic leaders (civil and religious) prohibit full reporting, and many suicides are not investigated because of family objections, while many are considered “honor killings” that are both voluntary (suicide) and involuntary (murder) which is seldom reported and less often dealt with given its religious and family overtones. In China, over 75% of all suicides are in the rural areas and the majority of suicides are among women lacking dowries. Suicides in Japan, where there is one suicide every fifteen minutes by the year 2006, are high among students, given the emphasis on academic success and the movement of a class into a profession. Those who claimed that they were /are atheists or had no religion had abandoned religion as a consequence of depression or hopelessness, frequently because of terrorism within religion itself: the concept of unforgiving god, the fright of the existence of a possible hell and torment in an afterlife, and family pressure to practice the community faith.

In the USA, the greatest pressure is found in Mormon families where, regardless of the stress a family member feels, or because of depression commits suicide, the family is quickly on the defensive, arguing that the family is loving group, compassionate, caring, and they have no idea of why the suicide occurred.  This is classic denial (abnegation) of reality, as the family protestations are an effort to shore up the family itself as being the foundation for growth and community (cf. Neeleman J, Halpern D, Leon D, Lewis G. (1997). “Tolerance of suicide, religion, and suicide rates: an ecological and individual study in 19 Western countries”. Psychological Medicine 1997; 27:1165–1171).  The tragedy is that it is universal as seen in the World Health Organization statistics on suicides 2003.

As Sigmund Freud noted, abnegation is a personal or family defense mechanism in which the existence of unpleasant internal or external realities is kept out of conscious.  In psychodynamic psychology, denial is found in any person who unconsciously puts up a barrier to experiencing what is too painful to consciously bear, especially the loss of a family member, personal pride, or reputation.  While the person rejects the idea that a family member committed suicide, that is a ruse for denying responsibility: being open to talking with the person before the suicidal act took place, or defending “the family honor” or the “family name” or reputation.  To this end a family will argue against anyone who claims the suicide was the result of a dysfunctional family situation, the inability to communicate interactively with the family members (the one in denial will protest that she or he was always receptive to a discussion)—but not about certain aspects, such as human sexuality, which is why most LGBT members leave the home, seek a life of their own without family encumbrances, and when faced with bullying for others or the bullying of silent distance between them and their families or significant others will commit suicide. (cf. Freud, Anna. (1937). The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defense, London: Hogarth Press and Institute of Psycho-Analysis. (Revised edition: 1966 (US), 1968 (UK)); and, Paulhus, D.L., Fridhandler B., & Hayes S. (1997). “Psychological defense: Contemporary theory and research.” In Briggs, Stephen; Hogan, Robert Goode; Johnson, John W. (1997). Handbook of personality psychology. Boston: Academic Press. pp. 543–579).

Numerous studies show that members of the family: from parents to siblings as well as grandparents and cousins, actually bully those who are less prone to defending themselves and their individual rights.  Highly critical parents and older siblings can have a negative effect on the self-esteem of the younger children in the family (cf. Safer, Jeanne (2002). The Normal One: Life with a Difficult or Damaged Sibling. New York, NY, USA: The Free Press).  Families deny that children have rights, and in many cases, because of strong religious ties, especially within the Mormon, Roman Catholic and evangelical communities, praise parents who are overly strict with their children.  This leads to a rise in both bullying and suicides.

It is the feelings of guilt, embarrassment and shame by a family when one of its members commits suicide that leads to outbursts, denial (frequently denials even of the death or cause(s) of and/or for the suicide) that accompanies the advent of the feeling of anxiety.  Anxiety is felt as an increase in bodily or mental tension and the signal that the organism receives that allows it the possibility of taking defensive action towards the perceived danger by claiming another source, reason, or person is responsible for either the actual suicide or for mistranslating the cause célèbre that created the anxiety.  This, of course, is psychological transference neurosis.

Sigmund Freud saw transference neurosis as occurring in patients who would not accept reality by arguing that the blame lay with the physician or therapist [today it could be a writer, newspaper, or other source], stating that transference neurosis is: “a whole series of psychological experiences are revived not as belonging to the past, but as applying to the person of the physician at the present moment”  (Sigmund Freud, “Case Histories 1 – Dora and Little Hans”, The Penguin Freud Library, Volume 8, 1990); cp. Freud, Sigmund (collected 1959). Clinical Papers. New York, NY, USA: Basic Books, vol. 2, p. 125, 251, 344, vol. 4, p. 43).  It is at this point, as Freud argued at length in several works, that religion takes over; while the illusions offered by religion can temporarily satisfy, religion and its confessional stands can lead to neurosis that are both egotistic and self-protecting, as well as antisocial where guilt is fostered by “giving into temptation” rather than eschewing it in favor of prayer or corporal acts of mercy and charity.  As Freud wrote: “Unredeemed backslidings into sin are even more common among the pious than among neurotics, and these give rise to a new form of religious activity, namely, the acts of penance of which one finds counterparts in the obsessional neurosis (Freud, op. cit. vol. 2, pp. 33-34; cp. Freud, Die Traumdeutung) leading to the repression of reality and what occurred (Freud, Collected Papers, vol. 4, pp. 86-87, 90-91 with emphasis on countering unbearable thoughts in vol. 1, p. 155).

Bullying is abusive and aggressive behavior of a person who is mentally ill.  It is expressed emotionally, physically, and verbally and frequently leads to thoughts of suicide or the act of suicide. It is most commonly found in the school, church, and the family—and it is in these three areas that it is most commonly denied and little is done to stop bullies braying from pulpits as they pound their religious literature, or from the teacher’s desk where the instructor rants about a student’s clothing, hairstyle, selection of friends or life style, or at the breakfast or dinner table where the authority of the patriarch is preached as if the family leader was somehow divinely ordained.  To question authority is forbidden, and to differ from the family leader invites the same corporal punishment that was dealt out to Martin Luther by his parents who beat him until the blood ran from his skin, allegedly for stealing one nut (Roland H. Bainton (1950), Here I Stand: A Life of Martin Luther. New York: NY, USA: Abingdon-Cokesbury, p. 23; cp. Erik H. Erikson (1962). Young Man Luther: A Study in Psychoanalysis and History.  New York: NY, USA: Norton Library, pp. 67-68 seq.). Numerous studies, both clinical and historical, show that bullying is linked to family violence, which explains Martin Luther’s verbal and written assaults on both the Jews of Germany but on the peasants in rebellion in his Wider die räuberischen und mörderischen Rotten der Bauern (1525), but the writings of those who take to cyber bullying and physical bullying as with the two students who were bullied into killing their bullies before committing suicide in 1999 at Columbine High School.

Eric Harris (left) and Dylan Klebold (right)

More than two-thirds of the academically brilliant students are bullied. More than one-third harbor thoughts of violent revenge; about half will enact or act out their scenarios for revenge.  The was the case with two senior students, Eric David Harris (April 9, 1981 – April 20, 1999) and Dylan Bennet Klebold (September 11, 1981 – April 20, 1999), who decided to hunt down their bullies and taking charge of their own lives.  On April 20, 1999, the two youths killed  thirteen classmates and wounded another twenty-four at Columbine High School in Colorado.  Harris and Klebold were among the most gifted—and the most bullied—at Columbine. Peer rejection, ridicule, and bullying—all of which create a lifelong tendency to depression—was a daily experience for Harris and Klebold that would erupt like a smoldering volcano.

Harris and Klebold shot their tormenters, giving expression to their growing hatred of being targeted by others who had nothing but scorn for them. Harris kept a log of the troubles he faced, and wrote about his growing hatred for the school and society, and began to pen death threats against those who bullied him, including calling both young men homosexuals (which several students said was wrong, as neither use was gay; in fact in the reports left by Harris and Klebold, the two acknowledged they called others “fags”: this is popularly known as “pecking order” psychology, first discussed in 1921 as Hackordnung by Thorleif Schjelderup-Ebbe in Zeitschrift fuer Psychologie, 1922, 88:225-252, and in teenagers, it is commonly linked to bullying (read here and here);  the two felt left out and had, over a year plotted revenge), while the athletes at the school taunted them as not being “men” who were involved in other “manly actions” and were accosted for dressing “differently” (Goldberg, Carey. “For Those Who Dress Differently, an Increase in Being Viewed as Abnormal.” New York Times. May 1, 1999) being known as the “Trenchcoat Mafia”.

No one at Columbine took notice or action to intervene; even the families of the two youth and their victims remained silent save for one mother who was ignored. It remains the scenario for today’s talented and today’s bullies—the bullies who write on Facebook and on bathroom walls for their victims to commit suicide as the victims now speak openly of killing classmates, teachers, deans, preachers, pastors, priests and parents who bully them.  It is an epidemic—one that no religion can halt nor erase (Kim YS, Leventhal B; Leventhal (2008). “Bullying and suicide. A review”. International Journal of Adolescent Medicine and Health 20 (2): 133–54). The solution is tolerance, acceptance of differences including multiculturalism that the Norwegian Christian terrorist Anders Behring Breveik rejected, and giving space and attention to those who appear troubled. Conformity is not essential for a fluid and dynamic society.  People commit suicide when there is no tangible, immediately ascertainable hope—religion cannot fill that void.  People fill the void as people are real and tangible.

FOOTNOTES

Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani of Lima, Peru

(1) “No abortion!” is the maniacal mantra chanted by one of the most ignorant and cruel bullies in South America: Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne cardinal presbyter of St. Camillus de Lellis (the first Peruvian cardinal from the clandestine and dangerous Opus Dei movement), who is supported by two other Peruvian Opus Dei bishops and the collective college of bishops of Peru.  Although Cipriani has been under prolonged investigation for the murder the liberal Jesuit and his predecessor, Monsignor Augusto cardinal Vargas Alzamora (1922-2000), the majority of the clergy in Peru rallied behind him because of his position in the church in Peru.  Vargas Alzamora—a stern and stalwart critic of Fujimori—was poisoned after suffering a “long illness” following his mandatory retirement when Cipriani was installed in his place.

Cardinal Augusto Vargas Alzamora

While Vargas Alzmora was more liberal that his successor, he was no liberal, but declared that there was room to co-exist with the guerrilla faction that was attempting a take over of the government, insisting that the Roman Catholic Church sought justice and peace but not at the point of a gun—and that the Church would always align itself on the side of the poor—the exact opposite view expressed by Cipriani who supported the dictatorship of Fujimori.  Vargas Alzamora established his own social welfare structure, known as Fe y Alegria (Faith and Happiness) and for a long time as the primate of Peru, took young people who wanted to develop their spiritual life to see the overwhelming poverty of the shanty towns on the outskirts of Lima so that his students could see exactly what social injustice means. On the other hand, Cipriani only stands with the wealthy and powerful;

Peru politics and church interference

he condemns women who seek equal rights, self-determination and choice, denounces students who demand greater freedom in the church, and rejects the spirit of democracy, fitting Peru to meet the identification of Cardinal Josef Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) that follows Nazi unofficial ideology of Kinder, Küche, Kirche (it was actually defined by Kaiser Wilhelm II (Depew, Chauncey Mitchell and Champlin, John Denison Champlin (1910). Orations, addresses and speeches of Chauncey M. Depew. New York, NY, USA: privately printed (8 vols), p. 260), but taken over by the Nazis and instilled in the Nazi Wahrmacht of which Ratzinger was a part until he deserted and became a temporary prisoner of war in 1945).

Cipriani is widely unloved and denounced by clergy and faithful as returning the church to its ignominious days of the Inquisition. When Cipriani’s elevation was announced, it was publicly denounced, and when an open-air Mass was held in celebration, it had few who attended, with the exception of the militantly conservative New Catechumenate movement and fraternity dedicated to the Lord of the Miracles. Cipriani denounced anyone who questioned his word or interpretation of anything as traitors.  The Peruvian Conference of Bishops condemned the protesters’ “disrespectful behavior” as an “anti-witness” and declared that Pope John Paul II’s decision to include Cipriani in the newest group of cardinals “must be respected and accepted by the faithful. Therefore, no offense against [Cipriani] is justified, let alone during a sacred celebration.” This cost the Peruvian Conference of Bishops popular support, especially among students who saw it as a return to the Dark Ages, leading many to abandon the Roman Catholic faith, and the bullying of its priests and bishops.

While Vargas Alzamora had worked as a member of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, and helped with the official re-evaluation of Liberation Theology acknowledging the right of the poor for political and social freedom, the work was rapidly undone by Cardinal Josef Ratzinger who saw in it too much of Marxism.  This delighted the small minority of Spanish-Peruvians who celebrated their enrichment at the expense of the poor—and quickly swung to the one-time professor of agriculture Alberto Fujimori—whom Cipriani championed.

Vargas Alzamora rejected Fujimori.  When the Japanese born president declared that he had won a second term (technically, by the Constitution that Fujimori suspended, he could not be president since he was not Peru born), Augusto Vargas Alzamora declared the second “re-election” illegal. From that day forward, many knew it was a matter of time before Vargas Alzamora would be “replaced.”  Those who supported him were openly bullied: students, parents, clergy, other Peru bishops, leading many to seek his death.

There is debate if the assassination was at the hands of Fujimori’s now-jailed spy chief, Vladimiro Montesinos who had Los Barrios residents and students from various universities murdered on the orders of Fujimori who was encouraged by his daughter, the current Congresista Keiko Fujimori who (at age 18) replaced her mother as First Lady and tried to cover up her father’s physical assaults on his wife; or if Cipriani did or had an aid do the actual murder. Former Justice Minister Fernando Olivera traveled to the Vatican in 2001 with letters purporting to show Cipriani sought the “elimination and incineration” of videotapes linking him to Montesinos after the church took money from the spy chief and requested an additional $120,000 “donation”; read: http://www.odan.org/media_peru_cardinal_upset.htm, the article is a reprint from the 2004 publication in The Wall Street Journal and various other publications; the accusers of the nefarious prelate include two other Perú bishops; the Vatican later declared the letters to be fake since they cast aspersions on a cardinal within the church).

Cipriani’s crepitating actions match the barbaric “Right to Life” movement in the USA, which is identical to that of Nazi Germany, that demonstrates in front of schools and clinics using Photoshopped images of aborted “fetuses” and warning women that they will “go to hell” if the women “abort your child [sic]”, and their spiritual ancestor: Adolf Hitler who prohibited “Nordic stock” German women from obtaining an abortion (while forcing abortions on Jewish women without their consent).  This was a common occurrence under Dictator Alberto Fujimori in Perú who had more than 200,000 mountain women forcibly sterilized in his crusade to cut down poverty.

Fujimori saw the “mountain women” as ignorant women who were not adding to his wealth or the fascist state he had created after suspending the Perú Constitution and ordering the mass execution of dissenters: La Cantuta: the National University “Enrique Guzmán y Valle”, July 18, 1992, pulling students and teachers out of the classroom; two years later a corrupt military court sentenced ten of Fujimori’s special assassins to prison terms from one to twenty years, ignoring evidence provided by generals that Vladimir Montesinos, Alberto and Keiko Fujimori’s closest friend and various military generals were the primary parties responsible. On June 14, 1995, one year after the bankrupt trial had ruled obediently to the presidential bully, Fujimori’s congress approved a law (many claim that Keiko Fujimori was the author of the legislation) granting amnesty to military, police and civil officials involved in human rights violations committed from 1980 through that date; those sentenced for the Cantuta massacre were freed; later Cardinal Cipriani was ordered to testify about what he knew, as many saw him as a conspirator eager to dispatch all students who he considered to be leftists or even terrorists.  This was but a copy of the La Rochela Massacre in January 1989, where paramilitary groups were organized to “persuade” [bully] anyone who opposed them, including children and students.

(2) Brown, Dan (2004). The Da Vinci Code (New York, NY, USA: Doubleday) is correct in the assessment and pictorialization of Opus Dei.  Followers (numeraries) do self-flagellate their flesh/skin; wear a spiked chain (known as a cilice) around the thighs for at least two hours, and kiss the floor saying “Serviam” (Latin for “I will serve).  The majority of Opus Dei bishops and cardinals come from South America and Spain, but there are four in the USA who demand unwavering loyalty to themselves and their “calling” to refute “liberalism” and bring “strayed Catholics” and Protestants back to a conservative church that hails the Spanish Inquisition as a glorious past in Roman Catholic history–complete with the millions of murders the sacerdotal clergy committed “in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord.”  The members take cold showers and sleep either on a board or on the floor in memory of the misery Jacob and Jesus is alleged to have experienced–without a pillow (cp. Genesis 28:10-19a, Matthew 8:20, which is even incorporated/plagiarized in Islamic theology).  They attend Mass daily, hear lectures on selflessness, and strictly segregate the sexes.

Opus Dei rejects Vatican II as it gave recognition to individual consciences and ideals and did not place much authority on the magisterium of the church. This was apostasy to the founder of Opus Dei and to such renegade popes as John Paul II and Benedict XVI who are strong admirers of Josemaria Escriva, whom John Paul II, over the objection of many in the Roman Catholic church denounced as a fraud and imposter, raised to “sainthood”–most of Escriva’s opponents reject that title and imposition by a pope many believe was already senile.

Father John McCloskey, a prominent member in Washington, has attacked the “liberal establishment” in the USA.  McCloskey has won the support of one-time US Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), as pose seek a theocracy to replace democracy.  McCloskey urges the creation of schools to teach Latin and Greek, devotion to the Mass and strict obedience to the bishops, but also demands solid educational training (minus theories such as evolution and human rights) so that the future generations can be similar to Escriva.

Opus Dei $75 million headquarters (New York City)

Opus Dei has no respect for labor, and in France forced workers to toil for free. Girls as young as fourteen have been forced to work from seven in the morning until ten at night, seven days a week–and when given a paycheck are forced to endorse it and turn it over to Opus Dei.  Corporal mortification of workers is applauded, and the organization notes that Mother Theresa of Calcutta and John Paul II practiced their concept of corporal pain and hunger, winning the support of Benedict XVI who is considered a closeted member of the group.  To “fan out across the world”, Opus Dei raised from middle-income to wealthy Roman Catholics in every walk of life (US Senators, British Members of Parliament, sports figures, entrepreneurs on every continent, entertainment figures, and so forth) over $75 million to build its headquarters in New York City, USA.  It is tightly attached to powerful bishops in the USA and throughout South America, finding support especially among the hierarchy of Peru, led by Cipriani of Lima, and Darío Castrillón Hoyos, of Columbia.  Its stated goal is to take over the world and

Opus Dei central headquarters Rome

force everyone to be Roman Catholic–Opus Dei’s idea of what Christianity must be: from the end of human and civil rights, the glorification of the male head of the household, strict obedience of children, rejection of bullying charges against priests and nuns, and the silencing of complaints and lawsuits against clerical pedophiles in the Church, in the same way as John Paul II ignored the issue and worked against those who levied charges, and Ratzinger (Benedict XVI who is openly called the Inquisitor General of the 21st century) has been especially effective in silencing dissent.

“Be fruitful and multiply”–how mistranslations lead to errors in interpretation

In what seems now to be a distant stained past, I was taught that everyone had the right to read the Bible and interpret it for himself or for herself.  I was wrong.  It was ideal.  It also lead to millions of separate interpretations, and with each pronouncement came anger, hostility, violence and worse.  Young, foolish, and not frightfully undereducated, and read literally–but did not understand the fine points of a message, the true meaning of words, or what they meant in their original context.  The real problem was that the Bible was not a unified subject but had been rewritten so often and from so many different sources during various times that it was not even a legitimate work–and certainly did not express the will or wisdom or hatred or love or any other value or emotion of any single god of any particular people.  Education in the Bible afforded me an insight into a work of mass confusion by demented and tormented writers and would be soothsayers.

G. E. Melchert (1936)

Like Charles Taze Russell, whom I consider to be the least trained, worse educated, and most incompetent man in the recent past, I would engage, like he, in “Bible Study.”  Faithfully, I read my King James Bible (KJV), thinking that it was the “word of God” and for myself and all others to follow as a test text personally written by “god’s own finger” (Exodus 31:18, Deuteronomy 9:10) but it could easily have been the “arm” of god (Job 40:9), the hand of God (Job 19:21), the face of God (Job 13:24), the eyes of God (Deuteronomy 11:12), the ears of God (Psalm 130:2), the mouth of God (Deuteronomy 8:3), the voice of God (Job 40:9), or any other appendage: all covering for the ancient Egyptian theology that had the creative force and ultimate writing tool being the penis of the god Min: a symbol reproduction and with it creativity during which time Min was known as Khnum, creator of all things, “the maker of gods and men”; cf. Frankfort, Henry (1978). Kingship and the Gods: A Study of Ancient Near Eastern Religion as the Integration of Society and Nature. Chicago, IL, USA: University of Chicago Press. pp. 187–189 sqq), following my pastor’s definition that he gave at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waterloo, Iowa.  I adapted my thinking to his.  G. E. Melchert seemed like a god: old, articulate, cruel when angry (with me that was most of the time) and assumed wise.  The idea that he was a sage and saint disappeared fast the more I knew him, and listened to him.

G.E. Melchert, like Charles Taze Russell, was a product of his time and its ignorance.  In the year 1936, In the year 1936, “felt the call” to start a radio ministry for the elderly and those who could not leave their home (“the shut-ins”).  on September 6, 1936, the first Christian Crusaders radio program aired live from Trinity on WMT-AM. From that time on the distortions within the current KJV became more than gospel, they became the inerrant “word of god”.  Because of lack of funds, the hour program became a 30-minute sermon, and changed its name from “Your Hour of Worship” to “Christian Crusaders”.

Bruno Schlachtenhaufen

Following Melchert’s retirement in 1956, Bruno Schlachtenhaufen, pastor of First Lutheran Church, in Waterloo, Iowa, became the second Christian Crusaders radio voice, and the bible continued its devolution.  Schlauchtenhaufen, like modern evangelists, introduced the concepts of the depravity of man, need for repentance, and most of the comments showed little of the compassion or love of the Jesus of the New Testament, thereby helping to build the Pentecostal credo of weeping for sins and storming heaven for divine forgiveness of natural human acts.  Sadly, many still believe that god sits in the sky (usually on top of a rainbow, defying the law of gravity), and will come to earth riding a horse followed by four other horsemen for the Final Battle).  The “gentle saviour” no longer exists, and hate increases.  Luther was a warrior who openly advocated assassination of those who took up arms against unjust nobles and vile governments ( Wider die räuberischen und  mörderischen Rotten der Bauern), dissented from his sermons or defied the nobility (An den christlichen Adel deutscher Nation), whom he encouraged to kill all Jews (Von den Jüden und jren Lügen), giving a reason to Adolf Hitler to exterminate more than six million Jews and millions of other people.   Luther was a martial mercurial madman whose songs, that I sang as a boy and felt triumphant, were hate-laced battle-cries to kill for

Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott: a rare early printing (1527) of "A Mighty Fortress" in the private collection of Dr. Arthur Ide

those in an army going to war, as with his battle hymn “A Mighty Fortress” that had god’s strength was ultimate, paraphrasing Psalm 46.  Its military message was quickly released and used by King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden who had it played as his forces went to battle in the Thirty Years’ War.  Luther was a firm believer that the End Time would be during his lifetime (Martin Luther, The Sermons of Martin Luther Volume 1 (Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1996), 62).  Luther did not have a firm command of the Bible, even though he did translate it, but his interpretation skills were unrefined as were those assembled at Hampton Court at the summons of King James VI [Scotland] & I [England] and his boyfriend, “Stinky” the Duke of Buckingham, and other translation centers from Geneva to Rome and elsewhere.

Fred Edwords

Graciously, ever thoughtful, Fred Edwords (National Director of the United Coalition of Reason: (202)550-9964 E-mail: fredwords@unitedcor.org) sent me news of how Hebrew scholars, known as the Bible Project, at Hebrew University in Jerusalem were discovering numerous intentional and deliberate errors in ancient scripture.  For example: “An ancient version of one book has an extra phrase. Another appears to have been revised to retroactively insert a prophecy after the events happened.”  The scholars are more interested in their research than the outside world, so that “in more than five decades of work the scholars have published a grand total of three of the Hebrew Bible’s 24 books. (Christians count the same books differently, for a total of 39.)” A fourth “book” is due out during the upcoming academic year.  Among the most dramatic frauds in the contemporary bible, as the Bible Project notes is in “The Book of Jeremiah [that] is now one-seventh longer than the one that appears in some of the 2,000-year-old manuscripts known as the Dead Sea Scrolls. Some verses, including ones containing a prophecy about the seizure and return of Temple implements by Babylonian soldiers, appear to have been added after the events happened.”  Luther’s edition is even more inaccurate, and reflects his own interests.

Most of Luther’s theology came from his private fears (Pass, Ewald M. (1959). What Luther Says: An Anthology Volume Two. Saint Louis, MO, USA: Concordia Publishing House, p. 696). In a Table Talk Luther says also, “It is my firm belief that the angels are getting ready, putting on their armor and girding their swords about them, for the last day is already breaking, and the angels are preparing for the battle, when they will overthrow the Turks and hurl them along with the pope to the bottom of hell. The world will perish shortly. Among us there is the greatest ingratitude and contempt for the Word…As things are beginning to go, the last day is at the door, and I believe that the world will not endure a hundred years. For the light of the gospel is now dawning. That day will follow with thunder and lightning, for the voice of the Lord and of the trumpet are conveyed in the thunder. It will come from the east, and the earth will be severely shaken by the crash with such horror, that men will die of fear. I believe that the last day is not far off, for this reason: the gospel is now making its last effort, and it is just the same as with a light which, when it is about to go out, gives forth a great flash at the end as if it is intended to burn a long time yet, and then it is gone. So it appears to be in the case of the gospel, which seems on the point of widely extending itself, but I fear that it also will go out in a flash, and that the last day will then be at hand. It is just so with a sick man: when he is about to die he often appears most refreshed, and in a trice he has departed”.  This led Luther in preparing his people for the final battle, with his hymn.  The opening lines are:

A mighty fortress is our God,
A bulwark never-failing;
Our helper He amid the flood
Of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe
Doth seek to work us woe —
His craft and pow’r are great,
And armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal….

Homer Larsen

Schlachtenhaufen’s brutalization of the Bible accelerated under the third generation when Homer Larsen, senior pastor of Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls, Iowa, succeeded Rev. Schlachtenhaufen as radio speaker in 1962.  His church, situated across from what was the university’s golf course on old Highway 218, was a haven for those who needed reasurrance of forgiveness before they repeated the acts they repented.  I visited the church many times, and watched its construction.  Each visit made me more uncomfortable for the pastor and congregation were convinced that they alone were among the saved, and that any deviation from the teachings of Martin Luther was tantamount to a grave sin.  More than once I was told I was going to the hell they had in their minds, for mercy and love was no where at Nazareth.

Larsen had a long career, and continued his lectures until 2005, when the Board of Directors of Christian Crusaders asked Steven Kramer (he only preached six times each year), who was serving as the senior pastor of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Afton, Minnesota, to become the radio host of the Christian Crusaders.

The name “Christian Crusaders”(2), which was printed on billboards throughout Waterloo and Iowa, soon drew the attention of the Baptists who formed their

Propaganda mill of Hate

own Campus Crusade for Christ.  In 2011, the name was shortened to Crus in an effort to win young, ignorant and impressionable believers to their cause.  Differing from the leaders of Crus brought scorn and open bullying, and many neophytes attempted suicide.  The problem continued to be that people were reading the Bible for themselves and bigotry and hatred was pouring out of the passages while demigods from the early days of the Christian communities of the chrestianos and christianos  to Martin Luther to Adolf Hitler and Charles Taze Russell pushed the transmorgrification of the words in the original texts to suit their biased personal preferences.

Wartburg Chapel at Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa

Melchert knew German for Iowa Lutherans studied at Wartburg  College  in Waverly (where several of my family studied and others worked), and those who wanted to enter the ministry studied at Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, where German was one of the main languages as Iowa Lutherans were primarily of east German descent.  Greek, Hebrew, and Latin were offered, but the popularity of the courses was weak.

Small Catechism (1912 ed. now "rare"; in author's private collection)

When I began my Biblical studies, more than 55 years ago, my education was in reading Martin Luther’s Small Catechism and the Bible in English.  We memorized it, and my father, Herbert Frederick Ide who was a heavy financial pillar for Ascension Lutheran Church in Waterloo/Cedar Falls (leaving their school more than $1 million when he died that was given to the school after the death of his last wife, Mildred) made his children memorize it, especially the Martin Luther’s definition of the Fourth Commandment: “We should fear….”  I had to repeat that particular commandment and definition nearly daily as I was always rejecting some truth that Luther had divined miraculously.  Only later did I realize how hate-filled Luther was, and then I understood the bitterness and hatred that my father had for me–and I returned it by ignoring him.

By the time I was seven I would delete “and father” and recite only “Honor thy … mother” which infuriated my father and made my mother anxious for her own security as violence was a way of life after my father’s short stay in the Independence Mental Health Center, about forty miles from the family home.  My mother would be overwrought and query: “Are you afraid of nothing?”  I never was, and I still am not afraid to write or speak what I understand.

Love had little role in our daily religious life. Even at that time many things puzzled me as I discovered numerous contradictions within the Bible.  Each contradiction I noted on the blank pages in the front of my Bible–a practice I continued through my confirmation classes in the Lutheran church and even when I converted to Roman Catholicism and read the Douai-Rheims edition.  The one contradiction that stood out starkly for me was the word “multiply.”

G. E. Melchert lectured us not only on the sin of masturbation because of a man named Onan “spilled his seed upon the ground” (Genesis 38:9 f)–even though the Hebrew texts shows that the act was not masturbation but coitus interruptus: “And Onan knew that the seed [semen impregnating the ova] should not be his, when he went in unto [had sex with] his brother’s wife [incest was accepted and expected at that time], that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother”.

The word masturbation (אוננות or αυνανισμός) does not appear anywhere in the Bible (it is of Latin origin from masturbatus, the past participle of masturbari and is actually of Etruscan origin from the ablative of  manus “hand”  + stuprare “defile” and, therefore, is a hybred), yet as a convert to Roman Catholicism, I would confess that “I touched myself in an impure way” to the priests in the Confessional at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Cedar Falls, Iowa. I felt dirty; it made no sense to speak of private matters with another man, so I began to read more carefully the scriptures cited justifying confession–and found them wanted (that is another essay).  How strange, I have found it in my later years, that the argument against masturbation was an attack upon the

Min hieroglyphics

theology of the Egyptian god Min, where masturbation was a singularly special ritual that occured in public.  The Pharaoh was expected to demonstrate that he could ejaculate — and thus ensure the annual flooding of the Nile, and those who wanted a bountiful harvet would masturbate over their fields–giving an entirely new meaning to the Genesis myth of Onan, for in context with

Min, god of fertility in animals, crops, and people

Sumerian and Babylonian, and even Egyptian thought, to “spill one’s seed upon the ground” was an offering to the gods for fertility and reproduction–what Onan was fighting for was his own advance in wealth, not to bring up “grains” for his dead brother since the brother could not guarantee how the “new stalks” would handle their responsibilities or respect the gods of old. It was in ancient Egypt that the worshippers and followers of the god Min took his image  out of the temple, around which was a red ribbon (representing sexual energy)  trailing to the ground from which mortals were formed, and carried it joyfully to the fields in the festival of the departure of Min, that was similar to many believers as the death of the god Osiris who was depicted in art and hieroglyphics in a similar way, when they blessed the

Osiris (statuette)

harvest, and played games naked in his honor–the most important of these being the climbing of a huge phallic pole that was in the center of a great tent symbolizing the world as it was known.

G. E. Melchert, and Homer Larson who despised me openly when I entered Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, was equally determined to lecture against sex, and went from onanism (the theological term for masturbation) to harangues against abortion (an act that I have always supported since I was eleven years of age, having a cousin being not only forced to carry the unwanted fetal development by her father, but also rejected by her father and not allowed to return home until she put the unwanted child up for adoption).  Each pastor, like the priests at St. Patrick’s, and others I knew when I taught at the Roman Catholic University of San Diego (California) 1974-1977, told me that the single purpose of sex was procreation.  They based this idiocy on a mistranslation and misinterpretation of Genesis 1:22, 28, and other verses that read that the lords or god(s)/goddess(es), in the Hebrew the word is Elohim (אֱלהִים; the singular is El {אֱל} or Baal {בעל} that meant not only “god” but “husband”, “master” and “lord”.  These terms that were used by the ancient Hebrews not only as a reference to Moloch but in everyday conversation.  That is why the “husband” (baal), in the New Testament, is considered the representative of god on earth, or the Lord; wives are to submit themselves to their husbands (Ephesians 5:22) in the same manner as mortals are to submit to god.  The husband is deemed as tantamount or equal to god “the Lord”) in the New Testament–not the plural noun found in the myth of the Garden in Iraq (Eden).

Cuneiform tablet with the Atra-Hasis Epic in the British Museum

Solitary sex (masturbation) or sex between people practicing contraception (or family planning) is not discussed in the Bible except as a form of “beget” (yalad (ויולד): a transitive verb used for “generations” after a fetus is carried to term, is delivered from the uterus, and lives) as a form of amorphousness (chaos) or to libel as an act of selfishness since it denies the “right” of semen to impregnate the ova. Sex is more animalistic in the Bible as it is in most civilizations including in the New World (ref.: Amrhein, Laura Marie (2001). An Iconographic and Historic Analysis of Terminal Classic Maya Phallic Imagery. Unpublished PhD dissertation, Richmond: Virginia Commonwealth University; few know that a phallic festival is still celebrated in Greece on the first day of the Christian season of Lent), with pastors quaintly chiming, “if you play, you have to pay”.  Yet, sex starts with “Creation” (that is a universal story and not original with the Hebrews who copied it from the Atra-Hasis epic) and if fluid throughout the Book of Numbers. Many ancient pictures portray “creation” as the union of a god and goddess.

Union of earth god Geb with sky goddess Nut (Egypt)

The Old Testament / Torah clearly states that it is the animals that are to “multiply”: not mortals: And God blessed them (see verse 21 where god “created whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind…) saying, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let the fowl multiply in the earth”.  Man is not fashioned from the red earth (אָדָם or אבק, אדמה אדומה: dust) until verse 26, the female follows (verse 27) but is created from a strong substance: bone (Genesis 2:21, added more as an after-thought).

The Sumerian god Ningizzida accompanied by two gryphons. It the oldest known image of snakes coiling around an axial rod, dating from before 2000 BCE

The injunction for mortal multiplication is one of control and harvest; the “original sin” was lust for sex (Genesis 3: 16b) and with it knowledge of death that was the “penalty” for everyone, for the Serpent was ancient Sumerian god of Wisdom who was called “lower than cattle” as the original Yahweh was symbolized as a gold calf–following the Egyptian and Mithra tradition and theologies–a rival of the gods of the nomadic Hebrews.

Israel multiplies (Genesis 47:27) only because the ancient Habiru were mercenaries in the Egyptian army, and adopted the ancient Egyptian Trinity: Is[is]-Ra-El.  There fecundity was essential so that Egypt would have numerous generations of soldiers; to this end each “child” actually represents a tribe (Numbers 11:12; for example, the Tribes of Simeon included the Ain, Ashan, Azem, Baalah, Balah, Beth-birei, Beth-lebaoth, Beth-marcaborth, and so forth in Numbers 1:22 f), but not of the Hebrews, but of other nations who were ultimately seen as a threat–the “sea people” (Ezekiel 26:17, but the sea people were considered pirates many of whom were Philistines: Exodus 23:31) who would come after natural calamities defined as plagues (Exodus 1:20, 32:13).

As for the Hebrews being in Egypt, “multiplying” (Exodus 1:7, 10, 12, 20, here the Hebrew word changes to rabah (רבה) meaning “to be(come) many”: להיות הרבה).  This did not happen, as there is existing record, anywhere in Egypt, including in scriptorums within the pyramids and other tombs, that mention the plagues that a legendary Moses caused to destroy the land and first-born son of the pharaoh and his people, nor of any Hebrew exodus.  The Egyptians were strong bureaucrats who recorded everything, including the most damaging information that affected the empire, but all documents mention nothing of a Joseph, the arrival or leaving of his people, or any plague, not even of Pharaoh and his army perishing in the Red (probably the Sea of Reeds) Sea–nor are there any artifacts in any body of water surrounding Egypt that offer even a shard or other evidence of their existence.  If multiplication of a tribe occurred that would definitely have been recorded.  It is not found anywhere.

Neptune (Poseidon) calming the waves when commanded

“To multiply” was a fantasy used by many tribes to exaggerate their numbers so that they might appear stronger than their enemies.  It was used as propaganda to defend weak groups from being overtaken and their people enslaved.

“Sea monsters” were invented as dragons, howlers (werewolves) and jackals to entertain children and the insane (Lamentations 4:3).  We find the Leviathan (לִוְיָתָןwho was one of the seven princes of Hell and its gatekeeper (Hellmouth, an Ango-Saxon creature that appears in Anglo-Saxon Vercelli Homilies (4:46-8) where it is a dragon swallowing the damned: “… ne cumaþ þa næfre of þæra wyrma seaðe & of þæs dracan ceolan þe is Satan nemned”). It became a “whale” only in the Babylonian epic found in Job 41.  The Leviathan, however, is far older and I was never taught that as a child or young man.  Only late in life, while pouring over ancient script did I learn that this mythological monster that would ultimately take a central role in John of Patmos’ nightmare (the Book of Revelation or Apocalypse) as a seven-headed serpent (cp. Isaiah 27:1) being overcome by a hero-god developed as early as the 3rd millennium BCE in Sumerian iconography and theology and then as a rite of sexual passage.  It matches Job 41:2-26, and with the intensity of the same chaos-combat theme that appears on second millennium Syrian seals, where the storm-god is shown in combat with a serpent like Poseidon / Neptune struggling against the forces of nature.  It also appears in the Ugarit tablets, where Lotan, the sea-monster appears as a naked helper of the sea-god Yamm in his Final Day battle with the weather-god Haddad Baal who was the father and husband of the world.  Only in later scripts by rabbis who had to make Israel appear supreme was the tale twisted torturously so that Leviathan became a symbol of sin that, according to the Talmud Baba Bathra 74b would be slain and its flesh served as a feast to the righteous in [the] Time to Come, a horror story that would find ultimate darkness in the dementia of John of Patmos’ Apocalypse and the fanatical fantasies of the New Apostolic Reformation’s G. Peter Wagner and Texas Governor Rick Perry.  The more corrupt Israel became as a state, and the more infested were the minds of redactors, the more odd the account became with

Dhul-Qarnayn with the help of jinn, building the Iron Wall to keep the barbarian Gog and Magog from civilised peoples. (16th century Persian miniature).

the Midrash called Pirke de-Rabbi Eliezer stating that the fish that swallowed Jonah ( יוֹנָה; in (Arabic Jonah is known as Dhul Nun: ذو النون; meaning The One of the Whale, but he appears only once: Qur’an 10:98) narrowly avoided being eaten by the Leviathan, which eats one whale each day.  Jonah’s origin, as so many others, is found in ancient Babylon (Campbell, Joseph (1988). The Hero With A Thousand Faces. Princeton, NJ, USA: Princeton University Press. pp. 90–95) and other areas of ancient Mesopotamia (Lexicon iconographicum mythologiae classicae 8 vol. in 16. Zürich, Switzerland: Artemis, c1981-<c2009>).

Like the legendary ancient Greek Titan Cracken, subject to the god Neptune / Poseidon (who is the source of the Great Flood, earthquakes and horses, and who stilled the waters when a Young Man ordered them to be calm: the source of the myth of Jesus calming the waters, that is equally found in Homer’s Odyssey when Odysseus (Ὀδυσσεύς, we get an understanding of the name when it is a verb: ὀδύσσομαι {literally translates as “hate”}, meaning “hateful” or “wrathful” and was an indication of his anger toward the gods and himself; he was a hero to the Greeks, but to the Romans: “pellacis“: deceitful) calms the ocean storm with the help of Athena), the Kraken, actually has its counterpart in ancient Iceland (cf. Örvar-Odds saga that is a source for or of embelishments on John Patmos’ Apocalypse ) and Norway and feeds off the heads of children (Pontoppidan (1752–53), Versuch einer natürlichen  Geschichte   Norwegens. Copenhagen, Denmark).  The German word Kraken means “octopus”, and it takes ships to the “hell” of the bottom of the “sea.”  In Norwegian it means “old, withered tree” both tht swallowed/absorbed children.

The loss of the children (future military), ancient tribes, universally, were ordered to be “fruitful” for the word “fruit” is from para (פורה) and means “living sperm” (Ezekiel 19:10).  To do anything that would cause the loss of male progency in many simple communities was a cause for alarm, and thus masturbation was considered the killing of baby boys (girls were not considered in medieval literature in damnations of the solitary practice).  This this does not follow the original scrolls as it is not a part of the far more ancient texts of Sumeria or Egypt on which they were based.

Sexuality was for everyone: mortals and gods (Genesis 15:8).  It was used for ransom (Genesis 19:8) as well as pleasure (Genesis 38:9) including prostitution (Genesis 38:16).  In every case, sexuality was to know (the pure meaning of the word) another person, culture, custom, or tribe.  The word “sex” does not appear in the Bible (it uses various variants of “to know”), nor are their prohibitions against sex, only against ruses to excuse sex as in Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 where the reading actually is “‘If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman…” (NIV, ESV, NAS, KJV, etc); while the word “homosexual” does not exist in any lexicon before 1892, the New Living Translation (2007) wrongfully uses the word that does not exist, and the Bible in Basic English does not even include the word “woman” as one of its more than ten thousand “translation” errors, making it the least authentic or reliable Bible available; the original line or sentence is:  וְאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר יִשְׁכַּב אֶת־זָכָר מִשְׁכְּבֵי אִשָּׁה תֹּועֵבָה עָשׂוּ שְׁנֵיהֶם מֹות יוּמָתוּ דְּמֵיהֶם בָּם׃; Romans 1:27 discusses “lust” associated with idol worship: ὁμοίως τε καὶ οἱ ἄρσενες ἀφέντες τὴν φυσικὴν χρῆσιν τῆς θηλείας ἐξεκαύθησαν ἐν τῇ ὀρέξει αὐτῶν εἰς ἀλλήλους, ἄρσενες ἐν ἄρσεσιν τὴν ἀσχημοσύνην κατεργαζόμενοι καὶ τὴν ἀντιμισθίαν ἣν ἔδει τῆς πλάνης αὐτῶν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς ἀπολαμβάνοντες ).  Rather, the denunciations are against using sex as a form of worship (where men dressed as women; read: Patriarchs 2:2, coming from the Egyptian goddess Entu and the Battle of Qadesh, where Qadesh translates as “goddess/goodness of love”, which is the original telling of the War of Gog and Magog that first appeared in the Book of Ezekiel (chapters 38-39) as (Hebrew: גּוֹג וּמָגוֹג‎; Arabic: يَأْجُوج وَمَأْجُوج‎ {Qur’an: “The Cave” 18:83–98} and later in Revelation 20:7-10) or as denial of reality and of escape from depression and estrangement from another. Every civilization and religious “scholar” has claimed that the evil empire is the one that opposes its empire, which came most recently with George W. Bush’s claim as president of the USA that he would war against the “axis of evil” that has helped make the USA the most hated and untrustworthy nation on the planet.

Syrian goddess of fertility Qadesh in Egypt (stele)

Qadesh was a minor deity in Egypt and was probably an Asiatic import.

Goddess Hathor of agriculture (Egyptian/Persian source for story of Ruth)

The Egyptians regarded her as an aspect of Hathor and pictured her as a nude woman holding flowers and standing on the back of a lion.  Qadesh is reminiscent of the Persian Anahita, or the Phoenician Anat who is also called Qadesh.  This Middle-Eastern goddess was the protector and inventor of sacred ecstasy and sexual pleasure.  Because she elevated sex above the chance-possibility (she defined it as accidental-action) of procreation, Qadesh was adopted in the New Kingdom by the Egyptians into a triad or Holy Trinity (of which there were many) with the gods Min and Reshep.

The name Qadesh means ‘holy’.  It references sacred actions to maintain a bountiful harvest of grain and fish, and the goddess was symbolized at times as “bread and fish”.  In existing iconography of the theology of this goddess we find the manifestation of the sensuousness inherent in the goddesses Astarte and Anat–who were the prototypes for Asherah–the wife of Yahweh.

The Egyptian god Min

Qadesh rides naked on the back of a lion and holds out symbols of eroticism and fertility to her companions:  lotuses for Min and snakes or papyrus plants for Reshep, as snakes (in Hebrew: נחש) in ancient Middle Eastern religions were symbols for education and health and for that reason appeared the staffs of professors of astrology and guarded temples that served as schools (King, Leonard W (1969). A history of Babylon, from the foundation of the monarchy to the Persian conquest. New York, AMS Press, p. 72) and medical practitioners such as Hippocrates and the rod of Asclepius complete with the caduceus (entwined serpents), the Greek god of medicine. It is written that: “Asclepias’ reptile was a healing creature: in ancient mythology the snake, whose skin was shed and rejuvenated, symbolized eternity and restoration of life and health” (Jonsen, Albert R. (1990). The New Medicine and the Old Ethics.  Cambridge, MA, USA: Harvard University Press, p. 122).

Marriage of Min, Qedesh/Qadesh, and Reshep (Egypt)

In the Levant the cult of Qadesh, like that of Astarte, involved her acolytes simulating the sacred marriage of the goddess with Reshep.  Reshep was the Egyptian version of the Semitic Aleyin/Amurru, who was originally a vegetation god (the Canaanite Osiris) but transformed by the Egyptians into a warrior that would become the Jesus of Revelation, carrying a sword and riding on a white horse as found in Egyptian art.  While John Patmos’ Jesus wears a crown of gold, the Egyptians have the deity crowned with gazelle’s horns.

Reshep, as a war-god whose origins are Syrian, was heralded into the Egyptian pantheon in Dynasty XVIII. Initially, Reshep’s characteristic stance is one of brandishing a mace or axe over his head. He wears a beard in the Syrian style and he normally wears the Upper Egyptian crown adorned with a gazelle head in front and a ribbon behind.  While, iconographically, the gazelle connects Reshep with the god Seth (the mythological third son of Eve), it is the Theban war-god Montu with whom Reshep has the greatest affinity. His martial temperament and sexual escapades makes him an ideal royal deity, especially in an era boasting of the military and sporting prowess of its monarchs. This is seen on the stela of Amenhotep II (Dynasty XVIII) set up near the Sphinx at Giza where Reshep and the goddess Astarte are described as rejoicing at the crown prince’s diligence in looking after his horses even while engaged in sexual pleasures. Reshep received numerous Egyptian epithets, including ‘Lord of the Sky’ and ‘Lord of Eternity’.  He appears on Theban stelae alongside the Egyptian god Min (1) and the Syrian goddess Qadesh. Reshep becomes (possibly because of Syrian enclaves amoung the Egyptian population) an approachable deity who can grant success to those praying to him. His force for destruction of royal enemies in battle can be turned against diseases affecting ordinary people. If there had ever been the plagues of Moses, they would have been recorded at this time, for there was great attention to details of any plague, infirmity or illness, as this was the era for the birth of medical studies.  Instead it is no other god than Reshep and his wife Itum who are called upon in a magical spell to overpower the ‘akha’- demon causing abdominal pains.  It is he and Itum that are the polarities of life and death, and he is known both in Egypt and the Near East as Reshep-Shulman.

Temptation of Eve; serpent is female representing knowledge

This sexuality displayed by Qadesh naturally led to an identification between her and Hathorthe Egyptian goddess of Love.  The serpent is phallic in nature and art.  In ancient civilizations the serpent is always presented as female, which may be the reason that most medieval artists (sculptors and painters) presented the serpent in the garden as a female), as she is a temptress; in patriarchial societies, the serpent is male and symbolized as an erect phallus.  In Arabic, serpent means “life” and “life-giver”.  Depending if the serpent is pictured or represents a male, a female or androgynous god it has different qualities to different people: death, destruction, rebirth, authority, sin, trickery, temptation, wisdom, prophecy, mystery, fertility, healing, medicine, poisoning, warning, renewal, mortality, and immortality.  The fruit of the Tree of Knowledge is the wisdom to know that all things are mortal and will perish: both people and gods will die.

Eve, The Serpent, and Death (by Baldung)

The Egyptians had the serpent as encompassing the world, and the Greeks called that Ouroboros (οὐράβόρος) although it actually comes from the Norse

Jormungandr, Norse sea serpent, Norwegian sea monster,

Jormungandr (it does have a Mesoamerican equal in Quetzalcoatl, the Feathered Serpent deity represents both the earth and the sky).  In all cases it circles around the global in quest of knowledge and swallows its own tail.

Quetzalcoatl "feathered-serpent god" of the Aztecs (400 BCE - 600/900 CE)

Quetzalcoatl has a father known as Mixcoatl. Mixcoatlis the Cloud Serpent deity who is identified with the heavens and the Milky Way, and in most cultures is depicted with a sacred tree: usually coiled around the base waiting for a man to debate it, but always discovering that a woman is far more intelligent than any man, and so the serpent debates the woman–and loses (Black, Jeremy & Anthony Green  (1992). Gods, Demons and Symbols of Ancient Mesopotamia, An Illustrated Dictionary. Austin, TX, USA University of Austin Press).

Since most ancient theologies had sexual rites of passages as well as sexual celebrations of victories of gods and goddesses, pregnancy was always a risk if the Qadesh was a woman.  The ancient world had no problem with abortion for the zygote (known as a “seed”) was not considered human, but seen as unwanted “particles”.  To this end, abortion was commonly practiced and no one but the woman carrying the unwanted evolving fetal cells could make a decision to retain the development within the uterus or abort it.

A leaf from the Ebers Papyrus (ca. 1550 BCE), the oldest extant manuscript detailing abortion procedures.

We find records on abortion no later than 1550 BCE in Egypt, as they were recorded in what is called the Ebers Papyrus (Potts, Malcolm, & Campbell, Martha (2000).  “History of contraception.” Gynaecology and Obstetrics, vol. 6, chapter 8).  Potts and Campbell discuss the Ebers Papyrus as it contains the earliest known description of abortion (ca. 1550 BCE).  It is an ancient Egyptian medical text drawn, ostensibly, from records dating as far back as the third millennium BCE, and suggests that an abortion can be induced with the use of a plant-fiber tampon coated with a compound that included honey and crushed dates; later herbal abortifacients included the long-extinct silphium, the most prized medicinal plant of the ancient world.  This text was used widely throughout Egypt and its conquered territories, and ultimately made its way into ancient Greece and Canaan where the Habiru nomadic tribes were struggling to conquer and take control of lands that belonged to the Philistines and Phoenicians for centuries. One aspect that is frequently silenced is the Ebers Papyrus Prescription E618 on the medicinal cannabis especially during an abortion procedure, as read here:

Ebers Papyrus 78: text on medical cannabis

Every ailment was discussed.  The above text on Cannabis being employed as a poultice on a toenail (E 618, Ebers Papyrus 617- 618): If you find a painful finger or a toe, from water having been around them (serosity), their odor being malignant, whereas they have formed maggots [worms], you must say to this patient: “A problem that I can treat”. You must prepare for him treatments to kill the vermin [. . .]. Another for the toenail: honey: 1/4; ochre 1/64; cannabis: 1/32; hedjou resin: 1/32, ibou plant: 1/32. Prepare as for the preceding, and dress with it’…” and goes from one infirmity to another.  An unwanted pregnancy was considered only another infirmity that could be cured by a medical practitioner.

Even in ancient Hebrew society there was a rite of passing the unwanted egg from the woman (Numbers 5:18. “And the priest shall set the woman before the LORD, and uncover the woman’s head, and put the offering of memorial in her hands, which [is] the jealousy offering: and the priest shall have in his hand the bitter water that causeth the curse….”).

In ancient China we also find detailed records of abortion c. 500 BCE  (Glenc, F. (1974). “Induced abortion – a historical outline.” Polski Tygodnik Lekarski, 29 (45), 1957-8. 1974). In China, folklore dates the use of mercury to induce abortions to about 5,000 years ago (Christopher Tietze and Sarah Lewit (1969), “Abortion”, Scientific American, Issue 220, p. 21).  Mercury, of course, is extremely toxic, but not as lethal as the denunciations by men who sit in clerical positions and have no chance whatsoever of becoming pregnant.

Today’s anti-Choice crowd are not only hypocrites but ignorant of history, language, and the evolution of the fetus.  May claim they oppose abortion because of Hippocrates and proclaim wrongly that doctors cannot perform abortions having taken the Hippocratic oath.  The ignorance of such people, especially prelates, priests and pastors in the churches is exposed easily, as Hippocrates offered abortion to his patients despite being opposed to pessaries and potions which he considered too dangerous. Furthermore, Hippocrates is recorded as having instructed a prostitute to induce abortion by jumping up and down (that is safer than some other methods, but rather ineffective). There is solid evidence that Hippocrates also believed in and used dilation and curettage to induce abortions as well (Lefkowitz, Mary R. & Fant, Maureen R. (1992). Women’s Life in Greece & Rome: a Source Book in Translation. Baltimore, MD, USA: Johns Hopkins University Press; and Ide, Arthur Frederick (1986). Abortion Handbook: The History, Legal Progress, Practice & Psychology of Abortion; 3rd ed., with an introduction by Carlotte Taft and illustrations by Nicholas Lashmet.  Las Colinas, TX, USA: The Liberal Press).

Abortions were equally common, and no churchman wrote out against abortions as there were Biblical statements determining when a soul entered a fetus/baby depending upon its age.  But to avoid the toxicity of many remedies, herbal methods were likely more common and many of the traditional herbs and mixtures are in use even today. There are numerous manuscripts not destroyed by the church that date as early as 1200 CE that show herbalists how to prepare Pennyroyal (Riddle, John M. (1992). Contraception and Abortion from the Ancient World to the Renaissance. Cambridge, MA, USA: Harvard University Press), but the oil is extremely dangerous and modern herbalists avoid it. Deaths from its use were recorded in the US in the 1990’s.

As the churches in Eastern and Western Europe became more gyneophobic and misogynistic, women, in desperation, turned to other measures to induce abortions.  These remedies included iron sulfates and chlorides, hyssop (a drug

Herb Hyssop Hyssopus officinalis

that the Bible claims Jesus drank to lessen the pain: John 19:29; today used as an ingredient in eau de Cologne and the liqueur Chartreuse. It is also used to color the spirit Absinthe, along with Melissa and Roman wormwood. Medically, hyssop has the properties of being antibacterial, anticapillary fragility, anti-inflamatory, etc., and can help with about 81 different medical conditions including cancer, bronchitis, insomnia, edema, colds, etc.  As an expectorant of mucus from the respiratory tract, it relieves congestion, regulates blood pressure, and can dispel gas. It helps with circulatory problems, epilepsy, fever, gout, and weight problems, but it will abort most fetal tissue at an early stage of pregnancy), dittany, opium, madder in beer, watercress seeds and even crushed ants. Probably the herbs most commonly mentioned were tansy and pennyroyal. We know that tansy was used from at least the thirteenth century.

One of the most brutal methods to induce abortion was practiced in the Orient in ancient times required the woman carrying the unwanted fetal tissue to violently knead or beat her abdomen to cause abortion, a procedure with great peril to the woman who used it. Wealthier women were able to hire professional “beaters” but if the woman died, those who had been hired were usually cut in half.

There are some particular herbs that have been recorded as efficacious for centuries. One plant is called the worm fern (it was also known as “prostitute’s root”).   Some women in Europe used thyme, parsley, lavender, and savin juniper, but these seldom aborted a zygote or fetal tissue–but the women did find them to be quite favorable in teas and soups. Some desperate women in desert countries, especially Arabia and what had been Mesopotamia used concoctions of camel saliva.  In Scandinavia, women had little difficulty in finding or brewing deer hair but those “cures” seldom worked (London, Kathleen (1982). The History of Birth Control. The Changing American Family: Historical and Comparative Perspectives. New Haven, CT, USA: Yale University Press).

The right of women to seek abortions was not restricted in many places until fairly recently, with most restrictions being related to the time of “quickening” or fetal movement. Even Plato proclaimed the right of women to seek early terminations of pregnancies in “Theaetetus”, but specifically he spoke of the right of midwives to offer the procedure. In early times, most pregnancies were not managed by doctors so it was logical that abortion be provided by midwives and herbalists.  Philo of Alexandria (Chayyei Moshe 1, 11) documents a fairly common Hellenistic belief that babies do not have human status until they start to eat regular food. Almost eight hundred years later (circa 800 C.E.), the Council of Metz did not impose any punishment for killing infants, and only after baptism was the child’s life to be guarded (Jakobovits, Immanuel (1959; 2d ed. 1975). Medicine and Judaism: a Comparative and Historical Study. New York, NY, USA:  Bloch Publishing Company). Even in the 21st century, women are still trying Hippocrates’ jumping up and down method (especially in Third World nations in South America and Africa), with as little success as their ancient sisters (London, loc. cit.; cp. Riddle, John M. [Chair of the History Department and Alumni Distinguished Professor, North Carolina State University] (1994). Contraception and Abortion from the Ancient World to the Renaissance. Cambridge, MA, USA: Harvard University Press; it is reviewed in Medical History. 1993 July; 37(3): 349–350 with a pdf available here). The word “abortion” does not appear in the Torah or Old or New Testaments, although the practice was common throughout Judah and Babylon. On the contrary, “ripping out the fruit of the womb” was demanded by the “jealous” gods of Israel frequently (Read: Ide, Arthur Frederick (1993). Catechism of Family Values Based on the Bible. Arlington, TX, USA: Liberal Arts Press, pp. 237-258).

(1) Min, the ithyphallic god of sex, is another form of Amun.  He was chiefly worshipped at Coptos and Panoplis. He wears the plumed head-dress of Amun and holds a whip-like sceptre, and is frequently shown holding his erect phallus in his left hand. Min is a proud, regal and arrogant figure. His ancient symbol was the thunderbolt (that led some to equating Min with Zeus/Jupiter) and he was sometimes considered to have been the creator of the world (another form of Horus). Coptos became an important entrepot for desert trading expeditions and Min became the god of roads and travellers (the prototype for Saint Christopher).

Min, Egyptian god of fecundity

Min was a god of fecundity and crops; the first sheaf of wheat was offered to him by the Pharaoh at harvest time, after that action a sexual ritual was performed in his honor. His sacred animal was a white bull while the games of Panoplis were held in his honour during the period of Greek influence, at other times the serpent-god Apep who was the god of chaos before creation.  He battled the Son of God known as Ra (who transformed himself into a cat) and was killed at the Final Battle (End Times; read: Assmann, Jan (1995).  Egyptian solar religion in the New Kingdom : Re, Amun and the crisis of polytheism, transl. by A. (2) Christian crusaders, officially first appearing as a term and a group of armed thugs and mass murders, were commissioned by Pope Urban II at the Cathedral Church in Clermont, France in 1095 for a Church Council (Chalandon (reprint 1925), Histoire de la première Croisade, Paris, France. pp. 19-22; the council lasted from 18-25 November, and the majority of the discussion was on End Times and an Apocalyptic battle, see: Fulcher de Cartres (1095). Gesta Francorum Iherusalem Peregrinatium (ed. Jagem, euer). Heidelberg, Germany, 1913, I.iii, pp. 130-138).  As the number in the cathedral swelled, the conference was later moved to an open field, where the speeches were interrupted with cries of “Deus le volt!” (God wills it!; read: Robert the Monk,  Historia Hierosolymitania in Recueil des Historiens des Croisades. Historiens Occidentaux 5 volsParis, France: Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres, 1872-1906). vol. III: I.ii-iii, pp. 15-16). The purpose was to enlist the second and later sons of nobility currently involved in fratricide battling older brothers in quest of obtaining the father’s lands and titles (patrimony).  While Peter the Hermit spoke of atrocities against Christians by Muslims in the Holy Land, most of what the Hermit claimed were bold lies, as Jerusalem (a city sacred to Jews, Christians and Muslims, and where all three groups lived in basic harmony with each other) was considered a legendary city of riches in bullion, relics, and other valuables.  The crusades were anything but holy or staffed with an enlisted army of spiritually minded people.  Instead, the crusades were among the bloodiest and vilest epochs in human history, with the Christian crusaders more terrorist than theologians, giving vent to rampage, rape, sodomy, and the murder of women and children–leaving the Muslims and Jews of the time (and to this day) to understand the word “crusade” to mean “slaughter and defilement of women and children” (Albertus Aquensis [Albert of Aix], Liber Christianae Expeditionis  pro Ereptione, Emundatione et Restitutione Sanctae  Hierosolymitanea in  Recueil des Historiens des Croisades. Historiens Occidentaux 5 volsParis, France: Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres, 1872-1906). vol. IV: I, 16-22, pp. 284-289).  When George W. Bush used the word “crusade” in his speech before

Congress after the tragedy of 9/11, united the entire Muslim world against the USA, and the rise of the terrorist organization New Apostolic Reformation and its anointed savior, Governor Rick Perry (R-TX), the USA will forfeit even more friends and the USA will become even more hated than it is today.

Bible on Abortion

The biblical injunction “Thou shalt not kill” (KJV: Exodus 20:13, copied into Deuteronomy 5:17; cp. Numbers 35:27; 1 Kings 21:19; Hosea 4:2, ref. Deuteronomy 4:42) forbids killing anyone outside of the womb.  The Hebrew word is ratsach (רצח) and it means to pierce with a sword.  To “kill” (שחיטה) is ritual animal slaughter: for the dining pleasure of a god or his priests (Genesis 37:31, Exodus 12:6 and 21, 29:11 and 20; Leviticus 1:5 and 11, 3:2 and 8; and so forth. Deliberate murder is violent (not therapeutic) and done with forethought and aggression without the consent of the victim (cf. מכוון) as in Genesis 4:15, and 37:12; Leviticus 24:17-18 and 21; Numbers 35:11, 15 and 30; Joshua 20:3 and 9; and so forth.

The Old Testament considers rape as denying the father the chance for a “just” dowry:

If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay the girl’s father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.(Deuteronomy 22:28-29 NIV)

Rape was common in ancient Israel. The most popular story is that of the rape of Dinah (Genesis 33.18 to 34.31). This rape led to full-scale genocide. The Old Testament women who were violated did turn, without being damned by their gods, to abortion: The tale of the bitter waters in Numbers 5:18-27 allude to abortion. Sterilization and coitus interruptus are mentioned (Genesis 38:9 & Deuteronomy 23:1f).  Birth control was commonly known and used throughout the ancient world, as seen in the writings of major authorities.  Scrolls found in Egypt dating to 1900BCE, describe ancient methods of birth control that were later practiced in the Roman empire during the apostolic age.  The Hippocratic Writings by Hippocrates were generated between 430-330BCE.  In Aristophanes’ 421 BCE comedy The Peace Hermes provides Trigaius with a female companion. Trigaius is worried she may become pregnant. “Not if you add a dose of pennyroyal,” advises Hermes. The Greek botanist Theophrastus (370-288 BCE) who studied silphium, an ancient ‘wonder drug’ known for having abortive qualities, was praised for his liberation of women “from fear and unwant[ed pregnancies]”.  De Materia Medica by Dioscorides was written around 30-40CE, and Gynecology, for example, was written by Soranus around 98CE.

There are even detailed on how to have an abortion in the ancient world.  Soranus describes specific steps to remove the fetus from the uterus:

First the womb must be separated from the uterus. In order to create the separation, empty the abdomen and purge it with warm and sweet olive oil as injections. Then bathe the whole body in sweet water, lingering in the tub, drinking a little wine first and eating pungent food. If at this point, it is not effective, then sit in a bath of linseed, fenugreek, mallow, marsh mallow, and wormwood. have injections of old oil, alone or with rue juice or with honey, iris oil, or absinthium with honey, or panax balm spelt together with rue and honey or Syrian unguent. If it is still not effective, then take a meal of lupines with ox bile and absinthium. Before abortion, take protracted baths, little or no food, use softening vaginal suppositories, abstain from wine, and be bled in large amounts. Then follow the procedures by having the pregnant woman shaken by wild animals, followed by a soft vaginal suppository, used as a “gentle” abortive vaginal suppository, such as myrtle, wallflower seed, and bitter lupines in equal amounts. Then mold to the size of a bean with water.

Abstinence was laughed at as both unnatural and abnormal. Sex was natural and human passions could not be controlled or contained save without great emotional damage wrote the doctors of the ancient world. To this end it is common to read scrolls from 300 BCE to the present detailing the sexual activities of men and women who took a vow of perpetual chastity and virginity–usually leading the vow taker to commit rape of both genders of all ages.  See: Berquist, Jon (2002). Laws 3.8.19; Ovid, Heroides XI: Canace to Marcareus, lines 11.33-42; Seneca, De ira  (On Anger), 1.15; Pliny the Elder, Natural History, Book X, Chapter 83, ibid., Book XXIX, Chapter 27, and Book XXX, Chapter 43; and so forth.

The closest the New Testament comes to these forms of murder is the word for selective and nonselective taking of life which includes assassination (αναιρεω or αποκτεινω).  The latter is for the erasure or execution of individuals and even entire communities (Matthew 10:28, 16:21, 17:23 where killing is by various instruments: και αποκτενουσιν αυτον και τη τριτη ημερα εγερθησεται και ελυπηθησαν σφοδρα, 21:35 and 38, 23:34 and 37, 24:9, and 26:4; Mark 3:4, 6:19, 8:31, 9:31, 10:34 to demonstrate the concept of killing consider και εμπαιξουσιν αυτω και μαστιγωσουσιν αυτον και εμπτυσουσιν αυτω και αποκτενουσιν αυτον και τη τριτη ημερα αναστησεται, 12:5 and 7-8; Luke 11:47-48, 12:4-5, 13:31 and 34; and so forth.  The fetus is mentioned in the bible. It is peri  פרי

When the fetus is mentioned it is mentioned as “fruit” that is not fully ripened or formed. Pregnancy was “to be fruitful” and if the zygote developed into a fetus, that fetus was referred to as “fruit of the womb.” The Greeks were equally explicit as to the timetable of the development of the fetus (see: Ide, Arthur Frederick (1993). Catechism of Family Values Based on the Bible (Arlington, Liberal Arts Press), pp. 241ff).

Each time that the Hebrews engaged in war, there was no injunction against slaughtering pregnant women (Joshua 10:8, 10-11, 13).  The Book of Samuel records (1 Samuel 15:2-3) that Yahweh demanded that his troops “slay both man and woman, infant and suckingling…”  There was special joy when “all the women therein[the conquered city] were with child [and] he [Menahem] ripped [them] up” or tore them out of the womb (2 Kings 15:16). Ezekiel was especially fond of slaughter children, new-born infants, and the fetus: “The children shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be spoiled, … wives ravished. … Their bows shall dash the young men to pieces, and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb” (Isaiah 13:13-18; cp. Psalm 137:4, 9).

The prophet Amos was far more colorful: “Thus saith the Lord, for three transgressions of the children of Ammon, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof, because they have ripped up the women with child of Gilead, that they might enlarge their border” (Amos 1:13). Here the word “rip” means to “cleave through” or cut the fetus brutally out of the womb by piercing the stomach.

While avid Christians, especially evangelical literalists are avidly opposed to abortion, there is not one passage in the New Testament that opposes it. The word does not even appear in any version of ancient Greek. Jesus does not even mention it, although abortions were common throughout the Hebrew world. The closest that a Christian can come to the issue of abortion in the New Testament is found in Matthew 26:24 where abortion is considered a valid alternative to slaughter: “…but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born (ο μεν υιος του ανθρωπου υπαγει καθως γεγραπται περι αυτου ουαι δε τω ανθρωπω εκεινω δι ου ο υιος του ανθρωπου παραδιδοται καλον ην αυτω ει ουκ εγεννηθη ο ανθρωπος εκεινος).” This verse states that it would have been better for any person who betrayed Jesus if he had never been born. The verse might be interpreted as meaning that a terminated pregnancy might be better than a completed pregnancy, if the child’s life would be miserable. It was not until the second century CE when the term “abortion” appeared in any Christian literature–and then in the disreputable and never accepted Didache [Teaching {of the Apostles}] Section 2.2: “thou shalt not murder a child by abortion nor kill them [sic] when born…” This passage (some dating it to 1056 CE although fragments were found from the second to the fourth centuries CE, although none have been authenticated as being true “gospels” or teachings) is disreputable but the passage comes closest to Roman law which forbade the exposure of infants, long practiced, on mountain tops as they were unwanted by their families.  The Didache is written from the view-point of a community leadership that distrusts, and yet respects, Christian prophets, one that wishes the prophets to leave town as quickly as possible, yet would have them welcomed in town when they arrive. The Pastoral and Petrine epistles stem from a slightly later time, when authority in the Christian movement was based on the prerogatives of office rather than on prophetic powers.” Earlier Coptic and Ethiopic versions also exist for a few chapters of this text. Especially important are two Greek fragments, Papyrus Oxyrhynchus 1782, dated to the “late fourth century” and published by Greenfell and Hunt in 1922 (12-15). These tiny scraps, about two inches by two inches apiece, contain verses 1:3c-4a and 2:7-3:2. Despite small differences, the wording on those scraps is very close to Byrrenios’s text. That is very important confirmation for the basic accuracy of Codex Hierosolymitanus 54, given the gulf of centuries between it and the earlier fragments.  Here is the text from a copy of the fragment in my personal library and dated to 564 CE:

Didache chapter 2 (verse 2 is on "abortion")

There were no church prohibitions against abortion before the fourth century. Those were made by men, but women continued to have abortions throughout the history of the church and mortal kind. It must be remembered that what people today consider to be the New Testament of the Bible was written, primarily, in Koine (Ionia) Greek (an unofficial diglossy of Greek and Latin was established in the city of Rome and Koine Greek became a first or second language in the Roman Empire which gave rise to many errors, especially as found in the writings of Justin Martyr who mistranslated the word for “pillar” as “cross”; see my https://arthuride.wordpress.com/2010/08/29/jesus-crucifixion-and-justin-martyr/) but many ancient scrolls are in Attic Greek (Athens), while the twelve apostles (like the twelve apostles of Zeus/Jupiter) wrote in Alexandrian Greek.  We do not find the condemnation of abortion in any of these languages, but actually do find encouragement for abortions in the case of incest and rape.

In Rome, before the advent of christians (starting around 150 BCE and becoming a collective group around 100 CE), it was expected that an honorable woman who was raped would, like Lucretia, remove the stain on her honor by committing suicide so that “the evil seed” inside her would not “flower and become the spawn” of the rapist.  When various marauding country fellows (pagans) entered Rome to collect back wages promised by an idle government and despotic leaders, turned to rape to express their anger and demonstrate their power to exact vengeance (rape was never considered a sexual act, in fact it was seen as an act of war: The Greek, Persian, and Roman troops would routinely rape women and boys in the conquered towns), early  Christian women would commit suicide before or during the act; those who did survive the attack committed suicide.  Christian women, for the most part, by the fifth century and the sack of Rome, followed the dictates of bishops and did not kill themselves, but there exists no records on whether or not they became pregnant nor were their charts or writings as to whether or not they gave birth to fertilized seeds from the rapists. The failure of Christian women, having been raped during the sack of Rome in the fifth century, to kill themselves was commented on by non-Christians with shock and horror, seeing in the actions of the women not only a disregard for customs but also as an offense against the gods.  The duplicity of the bishop of Hippo, Augustine (who fathered a son, whom he named Gift of God: Adeodatus, by a whore, dedicated an entire book of The City of God to defending these women’s honor and what he called “chastity” (inventing a new definition of the word to justify their actions as would-be martyrs): that a woman was chase if she refused a man’s sexual advance. Early Christianity also maintained, as non-Christians did not, that slave women were entitled to chastity, and that therefore a slave woman could be raped, and honored as martyrs slave if the woman resisted her master and any male.

Those who insist that women carry an unwanted fetus not only play god, but do psychological damage to the women who are forced by law to continue an unwanted pregnancy to term (See: A. Burgess & L. Holmstrom (1974). Rape Trauma Syndrome. American Journal of Psychiatry). In many ways, the legislators in Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, Ohio, New Jersey and other states who are attempting to overturn Roe v. Wade are waging psychological war on women and, following the women in the Reichstag, denying basic the basic human right of choice in their efforts to enslave women to the yoke of the state (Warshaw, Robin (1994). I Never Called It Rape: The Ms. Report on Recognizing, Fighting, and Surviving Date and Acquaintance Rape, Harper Paperbacks).

There were numerous writers on abortion in the early Christian epoch. They include: Dio Chrysostom (40-120 CE) who wrote in his Discourses, Fifteenth Discourse: On Slavery and Freedom II:  “but in the case of slave women, on the other hand, some destroy the child before birth and others afterwards, if they can do so without being caught, and yet sometimes even with the connivance of their husband, that they may not be involved in trouble by being compelled to raise children in addition to their enduring slavery.” (Cf. Plutarch, 46-120 CE, Romulus22.3; Suetonius (69/75-130 CE), in his Twelve Caesars, “Domition” 22; Soranus (98-117 CE), Gynecology 3.19.60; Galen of Pergamum (129-200 CE) On Natural Faculties, Book 3, Part 12: “Now abortifacient drugs or certain other conditions which destroy the embryo or rupture certain of its membranes are followed by abortion, and similarly also when the uterus is in pain from being in a bad state of tension; and, as has been well said by Hippocrates, excessive movement on the part of the embryo itself brings on labour.”

Fetal pain, religion, and science

Hysteria abounds, usually in the name of religion, that a fetus is a living person not only within the first eight weeks, but even at the point of conception–a view held and promulgated by the Roman Catholic church and extremist evangelical communities.

St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430) condemned abortion because it broke the connection between sex and procreation. However, in his Enchiridion, Augustine wrote:  “But who is not rather disposed to think that unformed fetuses perish like seeds which have not fructified”–clearly seeing hominization as beginning or occurring at some point after the fetus has begun to grow. Furthermore, Augustin argued that abortion was not an act of homicide–as most theologians of his era agreed. See: Augustine, De nuptiis et concupiscentia 1.15.17 (CSEL 42.229-230).

The Irish Canons held a similar view. They placed the penance for “destruction of the embryo of a child in the mother’s womb [at] three and one-half years,” while the “penance of one who has intercourse with a woman, seven years on bread and water.”  See: John T. McNeill and Helena M. Gamer, Medieval Handbooks of Penance (New York: Octagon Books, 1974), pp. 119-120.

In the Penitential Ascribed by Albers to Bede, the idea of delayed hominization is again supported. The woman’s circumstances are acknowledged: “A mother who kills her child before the fortieth day shall do penance for one year. If it is after the child has become alive, [she shall do penance] as a murderess.  But it makes a great difference whether a poor woman does it on account of the difficulty of supporting [the child] or a harlot for the sake of concealing her wickedness.” Ibid., p. 225.

In 1140, Gratian compiled the first collection of canon law that was accepted as authoritative within the Christian church. Gratian’s code included the canon Aliquando, which concluded that “abortion was homicide only when the fetus was formed.”  See: John T. Noonan, ed. The Morality of Abortion: Legal and Historical Perspectives (Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1970), p. 20.  If the fetus was not yet a formed human being, abortion was not homicide.

The Council of Vienne, still very influential in Catholic hierarchical teaching, confirmed that the conception of man put forth by St. Thomas Aquinas. While Aquinas had opposed abortion as a form of contraception and a sin against marriage (but not against nature) he maintained that the sin in abortion was not homicide unless the fetus was ensouled, and thus, a human being. Aquinas said that the fetus was first endowed with a vegetative soul, then an animal soul,  and then–when its body was fully developed–a rational soul. This theory of “delayed hominization” is the most consistent threat throughout church history of abortion. See: Joseph F. Donceel, SJ, “Immediate Animation and Delayed Hominization, Theological Studies, vols. 1 & 2 (New York: Columbia University Press, 1970), pp. 86-88.

Those who misuse theology and what they assume to be sacred writings argue that: “an eight-week old fetus is a “tiny human [who is] perfectly developed, with long, tapering fingers, feet and toes” (originally at http://www.wpclinic.org/trimester1.phtml, but now removed; in its “FAQs” it claims it neither performs nor refers women for an abortion). It is also common to read misinformation on blogs that argue: “By this age the neuro-anatomic structures are present. What is needed is (1) a sensory nerve to feel the pain and send a message to (2) the thalamus, a part of the base of the brain, and (3) motor nerves that send a message to that area. These are present at 8 weeks. The pain impulse goes to the thalamus. It sends a signal down the motor nerves to pull away from the hurt.”  (http://www.abortionfacts.com/online_books/love_them_both/why_cant_we_love_them_both_14.asp)

Joshua Holland (January 25, 2006) argues in “He blinded me with science; ‘Fetal pain’ is just one more bit of propaganda for the forced childbirth set.” at http://www.alternet.org/story/31312/?page=entire) that the truth is far from what anti-abortionists say. No recognized medical authority supports the contention of fetal pain. See:  Rick Ruggles (February 14, 2010), “When can fetus feel pain?” Omaha [Nebraska] World Herald at http://www.omaha.com/article/20100214/NEWS01/702149910.

During the presidency of Ronald Reagan, the fetus took on “personhood” and became a part of political pandering. Disgusted with the politics of intimidation and fear, I wrote three separate volumes on abortion. I noted that Bernard Nathanson, a former abortion clinic who found religion and began a crusade to protect all fetuses, distorted medical science and scientific fact in his unique Silent Scream. To illustrate his erroneous points, he used a plastic doll, arguing that it was a twelve week old fetus (the typical time that most abortions take place), with the doll pulling away at a penetrating needle or pin. The Chair of Neuroanatomy at the Yale University School of Medicine detailed in a letter published in the Washington Post (February 9, 1985), denounced the sham, noting that a twelve-week-old fetus cannot move independently by will as if it were sensing an impending abortion. What medical research has shown is that a twelve-week-old fetus is incapable not only of moving voluntarily but that it cannot scream since it does not have the required synapses of the cortex in order to scream. Synapses of the cortex do not develop in a fetus until its last months (not in the first three months). Furthermore, no twelve-week-old fetus has cognitive reasoning powers to scream. It does not have this cognitive reasoning power since it does not have well-formed nerve endings/fibers that can transmit pain impulses along the spinal cord to the brain and chemical neurotransmitters capable of carrying the signal from neuron to neuron indicating pain or the presence of discomfort as there are no developed neural pathways to transmit pain impulses.

Dr. Michael Bennet, chair of the neuroscience department of the Albert Einstein School of Medicine in New York City reported, the brain does not exist at the time of conception, so the fetal tissues cannot and do not think. Without a brain, the fetus cannot be considered a human being, not even a cat, dog, fish, or other animal. All that conception does is bring together a union of cells with potential.

There are no brain  neurons before the first four weeks of fetal evolution. The cerebral cortex, that portion of the brain needed for thought, feelings, and conscious awareness is the last part of the brain to fully develop. It has never been found to have developed in any fetus of twelve-weeks.

Dr. Dominick Purpura, former dean of the Stanford University School of Medicine, and later dean at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine in New York, has gone on record testifying that the development of the cortex with sufficient axons, dendrites, and synapses to sustain the thought process, does not exist before the twenty-eighth week.

Ever since 1973, when abortions were made legal in the U.S.A., religious fanatics have tried to undermine the right of the woman to choose her own life and the destiny of her own body.  Impressionable young girls are shown exaggerated pictures of dolls smeared with blood that the anti-abortionists claim to be “murdered babies”, but even at six weeks LMP (when the embryo is about one month old), the tissue that is commonly called, erroneously, a fetus–it is but the size of a pea. Most of the tissue that is actually moving is the placenta that is developing to nourish the growing embryo.

By the end of the second month (10 weeks LMP), the embryo is about one inch long and is beginning to develop distinct physical characteristics that are external. The brain has not yet reached its evolutionary maturity.

By the third month (14 weeks LMP) the fetus is about three inches long. It is protected by a fluid filled sac (known as the amniotic sac). There is no fetal heartbeat–not until the 20th week, and then heard only with proper instruments. Most abortions take place before this materializes.

Prior to the twentieth week, the fetus is nothing more than a collection of cells that have the potential of becoming a human being. It is not until the twenty-fourth week at the earliest, and closer to the 28th week in reality, that the fetus reaches a point of viability–when it might live for a very brief time outside of the womb–but then only under intensive hospital care. (For additional information, consider my book: Arthur Frederick Ide, Abortion Handbook: the History, Legal Progress, Practice & Psychology of Abortion with an introduction by Charlotte Taft; Las Colinas: The Liberal Press, 1986).

In a review of fetal pain literature, University of California-San Francisco physicians reported in 2005 that “fetal perception of pain is unlikely before the third trimester,” or about 27 weeks into the pregnancy.   The review, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, said reflex movement isn’t proof of pain, because it can occur without the brain being developed enough for conscious pain recognition.  The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ position is that it “knows of no legitimate scientific information that supports the statement that a fetus experiences pain at 20 weeks’ gestation.” Few accept the theory that any pain can be felt before the 28th week or earlier.  Arthur Caplan, professor of medical ethics and director of the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania, said that “on the whole, I don’t think science and medicine can be drawn in to support” legislation pending in Nebraska or in other states or nations that would limit or outlaw abortions.  Fetal pain is merely a propaganda ploy to gain supporters and needed currency to distort reality and give a bogus science to underage girls and boys.
