The radical religious and political right in the USA has emerged as the leading terrorist group intent on denying basic liberties and human rights. Closely tied to extremists groups and churches, such as the Westboro Baptist Church of Kansas, the Sovereign Citizen believes that he or she is above the law and demands that the US Constitution guarantees him or her the right to carry weapons at all times. The Second Amendment, as passed by Congress, to the US Constitution states: “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The sentence passed to the states to ratify states: “A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” In both cases, the freedom refers to a citizen militia to keep the government (federal and state) free from attack.
The Southern Poverty Law Center has reported on the Sovereign Citizen movement, now deeply imbedded within the Tea Party and stalwarts in the Republican (GOP) Party buttressed by Sarah Palin, one-time/part-time governor of Alaska and vice-presidential running mate of Arizona Republican Senator John McCain, stating “Sovereign citizens believe most Americans have no obligation to obey laws, regulations or tax codes, especially those imposed by the federal government. They justify their beliefs on the basis of decades-old conspiracy theories and intricate, nonsensical legal theories.” (See: http://peoplesworld.org/sovereign-citizens-hate-group-on-the-rise/)
Since 1995, the Sovereign Citizen cult (it bases its actions on literal interpretation of select biblical passages and transmogrified passages of the US Constitution) has executed in cold blood numerous police officers throughout the USA (See: http://www/youtube.com/watch?v=mktbLWzYZrl; cp. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIT2s0iYt_k, and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NK-6VW4vtOU&feature=fvw). In 1997, New Hampshire extremist Carl Drega killed two officers and two civilians and wounded another three officers before being killed–his death being condemned by members of his cult as “senseless police brutality.” Sovereign Citizens, who originated from anti-government activists going back to the Posse Comitatus movement of the 1970s, which recognized only local governments and no law enforcement official with more jurisdiction than a sheriff, also believe the government tricks people into becoming 14th Amendment citizens by signing contracts for privileges such as vehicle registration, Social Security and even fishing licenses (See: Associated Press, August 12, 2010, reported at http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2010/08/12/baffling_beliefs_mark_sovereign_citizen_theories/). What is most startling is they are supported by corporate-inspired right-wing revolt grouped around the tea party and extremist broadcast hosts such as Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and others who cry out for the limitation of all basic human rights that are extended to Blacks, Latinos, Gays and Lesbians, and other marginalized groups. When President Obama was elected at the height of the recession that was generated by George W. Bush’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that plunged the USA into a back-breaking debt to communist mainland China, these theories have gained a fresh wind with the appearance of large numbers of ‘birthers’ and ‘9/11 truthers’ and those pushing “immigration reform” especially in Arizona where all Latinos were considered to be illegal aliens until they showed proof of citizenship. The Sovereign Citizen groups are in most cases controlled by far-right extremist evangelical theocrats whose design is to turn the USA into a theocracy with the church ruling absolutely, with Sarah Palin being outspoken on “taking back America”. Speakers joining Palin
include Rick Scarborough, Roy Moore, and Joseph Farah, men who are radical even by religious-right standards. Their presence shows that the tea-party movement is no longer merely populist, libertarian, or anti-government, if it ever was. It is theocratic, and promises to be far worse than the Spanish Inquisition. It is supported by radical right school boards, such as the Texas Board of Education now controlled by extremists who are demanding that textbooks be rewritten to lessen the impact of Darwin, establish creationism as an “alternative,” revise the image of Republican US Senator Joe McCarthy of Wisconsin into one of being “a true patriot”, and to rewrite history books showing that Black people were better off and happier under slavery. (See: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/22/education/22texas.html) Texas Republican Governor Rick Perry has long been a supporter of Intelligent Design and outspoken in his views against empirical scientific data, making Texas public education of little value. (See: http://crooksandliars.com/karoli/texas-school-board; cf. http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/education/stories/042408dntexcreationscience2.917bf873.html) With the clamoring of Sovereign Citizen and other paramilitary groups, legislators in six states — Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri and South Carolina — have considered legislation requiring classrooms to be open to “views about the scientific strengths and weaknesses of Darwinian theory.” Surprisingly, the State of Louisiana did not follow in lock-step, and its State Board of Education rejected creationism. (See: http://www.thenewamerican.com/index.php/culture/education/5440-louisiana-school-board-rejects-creationism)
While police officers in uniform are usually the target for rifle assaults by Sovereign Citizen terrorists, more widespread than violence is a set of tactics known as “paper terrorism,” in which sovereign citizens use legal filings to harass, intimidate, and retaliate against public officials, law enforcement officers, and others. Most common is the filing of bogus liens on the property of perceived enemies. At the same time, Sovereign Citizen members seize and illegally occupy abandoned homes or those foreclosed because of default in payment (See: http://www.adl.org/main_Extremism/Sovereign_Citizen_Movement_Resurgence).
The primary base for radical Sovereign Citizen groups is in Texas. Carolyn Yeager is a Texas-based (Ingram, Texas) neo-Nazi and Holocaust denier who runs her own Web site. The site is filled with racist and anti-Semitic material, as well as essays promoting motherhood and home-schooling. Yeager is the Texas State Leader of the neo-Nazi American National Socialist Workers Party (ANSWP), a group that descended from the National Socialist Movement, the largest neo-Nazi group in the country. Not only does Yeager deny the Holocaust, but claims that the Jews who carry tattooed numbers were self-inflicted in an effort to extort money from Allied Forces. To strengthen her claims, Yeager authored the book Auschwitz: The Underground Guided Tour; What the Tour Guides Don’t Tell You at , published by The Barnes Review. In the book, she claims that Auschwitz was not an extermination camp and that Nazi guards looked after the health of inmates–although all authenticated records show that 1.1 million Jews were murdered at Auschwitz (See: http://www.adl.org/main_Extremism/carolyn_yeager_holocaust_denial.htm).
In 2010 there were several Sovereign Citizens who ran for public office, many being backed and supported by Dick Armey of Denton, Texas, and
Sarah Palin. Neo-Nazi candidates Billy Roper (head of the Arkansas White Revolution paramilitary force), ran for governor of Arkansas, and Frazier Glenn Miller, ran for U.S. Senate in Missouri (both as write-in candidates). White supremacist and KKK leader Tom Metzger, who in the 1980s received considerable notoriety for running
for office, received only 9 votes as a write-in candidate in his bid for U.S. Congress in Indiana (See: http://www.wane.com/dpp/video/hite-supremacist-tom-metzger-campaigns-for-congress). Jeff Hall, a leader in the National Socialist Movement and avowed racist
(http://articles.latimes.com/2010/oct/19/local/la-me-nazi-candidate-20101019) hoped to get elected to a seat on the Western Riverside Municipal Water District and received almost 28% of the vote (6,738 votes). Daniel Schruender, a member of an Aryan Nations faction, received almost 10% of the vote (1,807 votes) in his run for a seat on the Rialto, California, school board.
arrested on April 30, 1987, on numerous Federal criminal charges, and after serving three years in prison planned for and ultimately ran for the United States Senate in Missouri on a blatantly anti-Semitic platform. A darling of the religious right, on his web-site, Miller notes that his number one political goal was “to secure the existence of my people and a future for White children” (See: “Fugitive Racist Leader Is Captured in Missouri”, The New York Times, 1 May 1987; and Camille Jackson, “They’re Back: A fresh batch of extremist ex-cons hits the streets,” Intelligence Report, Winter 2004, Issue #116, Southern Poverty Law Center). At KMBZ (Kansas City) Miller ran the following audio ads:
One of the statements Miller makes in his ads includes, “Jews control the federal government and the media. Surely you don’t still believe white men are in control, do ya? It’s the Jews.”
In another, he states:
“The future of white children will be a nightmare.”
KMBZ is running a disclaimer with Miller’s material to distance itself from it – although according to the rules it can neither support nor denounce it in this manner.
“America is no longer ours,” Miller says in one ad. “America belongs to the Jews who rule it and the mud people who multiply in it.”
“But you don’t care, do you, whitey? All you care about is satisfying your belly, pocketbook and genitals and watching the coons play ball on television.”
Jim Rizoli, a Holocaust denier and an anti-immigrant activist, lost his bid to become the state representative in the 6th Middlesex District in Framingham, Massachusetts. He received 1,219 votes or about 9% of the vote. During an October 2009 segment of his public access television show in Framingham, Rizoli delivered a lengthy diatribe promoting Holocaust denial. He defended Holocaust denier and Iranian leader
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, instructed viewers to conduct their own research on the Holocaust to discover the alleged “truth,” and directed people to visit Web sites that advance Holocaust denial.
The National Prayer Network is a barely disguised hate group that openly supports Sovereign Citizens. Ted Pike, the national director of the Oregon-based National Prayer Network (www.truthtellers.org), has for years engaged in an anti-Semitic campaign that denigrate the Jewish religion, as well as what he perceives as Jewish-controlled organizations and leaders. Working closely with Tyndal House Publishers, Pike puts out more hate-filled literature than most other radical right extremists. To further his own publications, Pike has produced a string of historically inaccurate virulent hate-filled videos, including Zionism and Christianity: Unholy Alliance (2005); Why the Mid-East Bleeds (2003); Shaking Campus Liberalism: How Christian Students Defied the Pro-Gay Faculty…and Won! (2002); Hate Laws: Making Criminals of Christians (2000); The Other Israel: The Whole Story of Zionist Conspiracy (1987). He openly opposes federal anti-hate crime legislation, and praises African nations that openly kill homosexuals while praising the theocracy in Iran. Pike is supported by the “Orthodox Anglican Community”–a far-right conservative branch of the Anglican Church that advocates public executions of homosexuals, adulterers, abortionists, and anyone else the group decides is a threat to god (it is a communion that is trying to align itself, if not accept “conversion into” the Roman Catholic church as publicized by Pope Benedict XVI (See: http://www.virtueonline.org/portal/modules/news/article.php?storyid=13628). Pike’s extremism can be found in the words he publishes and speaks:
We need to help make the hate law unenforceable by resisting and disobeying inevitable government edicts (particularly as precedents from liberal courts) to limit free speech. This will require willingness to suffer for the cause of truth and freedom. To help empower such courage we must continue widespread education against hate laws (such as exists at www.truthtellers.org). We must publicize as widely as possible the fact that a cabal of liberal Jewish supremacists is behind all hate laws worldwide. These, Rabbi Daniel Lapin, says are in “relentless attack on evangelical Christians.” Only through encountering massive public resistance and exposure will ADL/B’nai B’rith (organized world Jewry) be slowed on their fast track to world dominion.
The epicenter of such liberal Jewish attack on Christian civilization is the state of Israel. Israel is a nation founded on theft, repression, and terror (See, Israel: Founded on Terror). Despite its claim to democracy, it is one of the most repressive speech crime regimes in the world. In 1920 Christians constituted 20% of the inhabitants of Palestine. Now, as a result of decades of official harassment and discrimination as well as “anti-missionary” laws criminalizing even casual conversations about Christ with Jews, only 2% of Israelis are Christians. The Israeli government continues to look the other way as Messianic Christian Jews in Israel suffer constant harassment, discrimination and even violence, especially from ultra-Orthodox zealots (See website of Lura Maimon Beckford). Knesset continues to propose even stricter speech crime laws against Christians.
(See: http://www.rightwingwatch.org/category/groups/national-prayer-network for Pike’s full comments, and his claim that Israel is the “new whore” and that violent resistance is mandatory of good Christians read it at http://www.truthtellers.org/alerts/resistancehelpmakehbunenforceable.htm).
Pike praises preacher-Governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas as the “chosen one” who will lead the revolution at the ballot box. In this he is joined by Iowa’s hatemongering and one time gubernatorial aspirant Bob Vander Plaats who is tightly leagued with the American Family Association and other hate groups and was endorsed by former Arkansas Governor, Fox News Host and Tea Party supporter Mike Huckabee (See: http://theiowarepublican.com/home/2009/06/10/huckabee-endorses-vander-plaats/ cf. http://blogs.desmoinesregister.com/dmr/index.php/2010/02/24/huckabee-praises-tea-party-vander-plaats/).
Vander Plaats (a former high school teacher) is a single issue theological terrorist with one goal: to stop homosexuality and its defenders. To this end the Iowa evangelical extremist, echoing the same words as the theological thugs (the Taliban: an Arabic word for theological students), Vander Plaats called upon the entire Iowa Supreme Court to resign after it ruled unanimously that homosexuals in Iowa have the same rights as all other Iowa citizens (See the story in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier December 7, 2010: http://wcfcourier.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/article_3567a97a-024c-11e0-b648-001cc4c03286.html; cf. http://www.kcci.com/r/26050009/detail.html; cp. http://www.religionfacts.com/homosexuality/islam.htm, and http://www.glapn.org/sodomylaws/world/afghanistan/afnews006.htm with the mangled Taliban Arabic chortling الشذوذ الجنسي هو جريمة ضد الله والانسان ، وهؤلاء القضاة الذين الناعمة على مثليون جنسيا يجب إزالتها من على مقاعد البدلاء القضائية وتنفيذها.)
James C. Russell, also known as Jim Russell, ran as the Republican and Conservative candidate in the 18th Congressional District in New York. Russell won 38% of the vote (46,547 votes). Russell has voiced white supremacist and anti-Semitic views in print and was a speaker at the 2002 conference held by American Renaissance, a white supremacist journal and was a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of The Occidental Quarterly, a racist journal, up through the Summer 2009 issue.
James Traficant ran for U.S. Congress in Ohio’s 17th district as an Independent. He won 16.05% of the vote (29,969 votes). Traficant, a former Congressman from Youngstown, was convicted in 2002 on various federal charges, including bribery, fraud, racketeering and tax evasion, and spent seven years in prison. Traficant, who is known for his long-time support of former Nazi guard John Demjanjuk, has made a number of anti-Semitic statements. In a 2009 interview in the conspiracy-oriented, anti-Semitic newspaper American Free Press (AFP), he alleged that “the Israeli lobby has a stranglehold on the United States” and “over government,” and that the United States is under a resultant threat of implosion. In 2002, he insisted that Jews not be included in the pool of jurors for his trial that year.
Tragically all have the support, endorsement, and financial backing of the Sovereign Citizens. In each of these theological terrorists there is a spark of hope for white supremacists to rid the USA of all people of color, forcibly convert every non-Christian to Jesus, and to rewrite history and science books in keeping with their versions of the Bible. While the “reverends” claim a spiritual education, none has a solid academic background. Mike Huckabee He graduated from Ouachita Baptist University, completing his bachelor’s degree in Religion in 2½ years before attending Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, but dropped out of seminary after one year in order to take a job in Christian broadcasting. He has two honorary doctoral degrees: a Doctor of Humane Letters, received from John Brown University in 1991 (John Brown was created and is still operated by the same family of the itinerant preacher John Brown. Founded in 1919 as a private, interdenominational, Christian liberal arts college in Siloam Springs, Arkansas its purpose was to spread Christianity not to develop critical thinkers or encourage genuine education), and a Doctor of Laws from Ouachita Baptist University in 1992 (a private liberal arts, undergraduate institution located in Arkadelphia, Arkansas that by professional standards cannot claim to be a university; its purpose is to spread the sectarian creed of the Southern Baptist Convention.)
Ted Pike is a 1971 graduate of Portland State University, with emphasis in art and philosophy. He claims to be an “accomplished film maker.” He has no theological education (See: http://www.truthtellers.org/tedpikebiography.html).
Jim Russell went to Fordham University where he studied Historical Theology but concentrated on Christianity and Christian Theology. His knowledge of its history is limited to textbooks published in the last thirty years.
